my mind on my money and my money on my mind (Reply to this comment)

Apparently, "Gin and Juice" is a popular one to cover. Personally, i recommend seeking Sissy Bar's version: deadpan indie synthpop, sung and completely disarmed in all its absurdity by a neutral-sounding white girl. Plus, it's much more hummable than the original. (I like their original songs too.)
We agree, incidentally, about the greatness of the Cardigans' "Iron Man", which does a lot to bring out the original's tunefulness. Sissy Bar, i think, add tunefulness that wasn't originally there.
cheers,
- Brian

I love the Iron Man Song. (That's thought 1)
And "Plus, hearing the word beyatch sung with a Texan accent should be able to make absolutely anyone smile. " You said a mouthful (that's #2).
Loved the review!

i heard a cover of that britney spears song - done quite well actually - but i could swear it was by Travis. oh well, i downloaded it and someone had probably mis-labeled it. unless any one knows of a Travis cover of that song? either way, it was just a couple of acoustic guitars and a singer, and it was really really good.
good list too.
have you heard elliott smith's cover of 'don't fear the reaper' or the zombies 'care of cell 44'. they're both wonderful, in different ways, and should be available somewhere on the internet. he's also done great covers of lennon's 'jealous guy' and the kinks' 'waterloo sunset'. anyways.
well done, good read.

The Fountains of Wayne version is really interesting because it almost makes it sound like the song is really profound. Interesting list.

Something about the GnR version of Live and Let Die simply rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps it's because back in college I went to pick up the newest live CD from Paul McCartney, and I overhead some kid making the comment "I can't believe Axl Rose let him cover Live and Let Die." *sigh...*

I prefer the ska-version cover of Gin and Juice, by the Berlin Project. it might be hard to find now though; they used to have an mp3 of it on mp3.com, but I think they took it down :(
and I dig me first and the gimme gimmes covers for the most part, just because they're songs EVERYONE knows. singing along to Annie and such just makes for good times.

I like the Guns 'n' Roses covers of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (Bob Dylan) and "Live And Let Die" (Paul McCartney and Wings) and Metallica's cover of "Tuesday's Gone" (Lynard Skynard).

I got one, I got one - although I'm not a fan of New Found Glory in general, they do a stirring rendition of Juvenile's "Back That A S S Up"...worth downloading if nothing else.

lol the LAST possible thing I expected to read in one of your reviews was "Gin & Juice" - Snoop Dogg. What is even scarier is that I'm listening to "Doggystyle" right now! Oh well. Good stuff, even though I have never heard of any of this stuff.

Fountains of Wayne doing Baby one More Time? Two words... NO WAY! In all honesty I kind of liked the original, so this sounds totally like, uber-interesting, dude! Eh, but I better get to bed first.

with your assessment of Baby One More Time. On a split EP with JUNO, the Dismemberment Plan did a cover of Jennifer Paige's pop ditty "Crush" and The Plan's execution is just so right on. In their hands it becomes a more mature and completely different song - the quiet/creepy/beautiful/haunting obsessive love song it was meant to be.
also - I am dying to but haven't heard Johnny Cash's American IV. the idea of him doing all of those un-ironic covers is just so great.

FYI: It was actually on the Doors tribute, Stoned Immaculate. Also, great STP covers of Revolution (Beatles) and Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin) also exist. I even dug one up of Pour SOme Sugar on Me (Def Leppard). Anyway...not usually a fan of covers...just covers done well if you know what I mean.

There are very few Doors songs that I like, but I've heard some pretty good covers of what they've written. I'll have to see if I can track down the STP version of Break on Through. Thanks...

of course not mentioned here. In fact, I'm pretty sure that there a few listed that I've yet to hear. ANYWAY, I'm a fan of Break on Through (Doors) Stone Temple Pilots for one.
And one I absolutely HATE is the completely useless Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns n' Roses) Sheryl Crow. That is CRAP.
Nice job...even if I'm not completely in the know.
