If you are satisfied with top 40 material and are paying high retail prices yourmusic.com could be a saving grace if you are willing to be patient, require no customer service EVER and are willing to commit to purchasing at least 1 CD a month indefinitely.
Basically yourmusic.com, a spin-off of BMG/Columbia House Music club, offers you CDs at the same price at the 12 for 1 BMG offer( a parent co.) but without the commitment. So on the plus side you benefit right away from $5.99 cd (PLUS TAX). (2/20/07 the price is now $6.99 plus tax for standard, media mail shipping. Faster shipping will cost you extra per unit.)
The club offers a lot of the same cds as BMG - essentially a good selection of popular artist for major label so if you like popular (non-independent) major label music like Carrie Underwood or The Fray, you will be happy with the selection.
Here comes the bad part though. Customer service does not exist. I am serious. Prior to Dec 2006 I was a member for proximately 2 years. December 2006 I decided to order some Christmas presents via the service. I placed an order for $500 to cover my list. The order was processed, my credit card charged and it never arrived.
I tried the web form asking for help but after 2 weeks of submitting requests for help I never heard from the service. After some detective work I found the main number for BMG and called the offices (in NYC,NY - not a toll free call.) After an hour on the phone I was finally placed in touch with someone who 'could help.' I was explained that the person in charge of the webclub was away and I left them a voice mail. Its been 2 months and I still have not seen the cds, heard from them or had a single reply and I am still $500 short.
Here is another gotcha they dont explain about the club: if you dont have anything in the queue ( a wish list from which the site ships you cds, monthly) you will still be charged 6.99 + tax without getting anything. This could mean that for months you can be charged money for merchandise you never received unless you work this issue out with your credit card since yourmusic.com's customer service seems to be on permanent vacation.
So is this a blessing or a scam? Depends on what you need... if you are careful to never use the site beyond queuing and receiving single cds you *may* be ok.
If you ever wish to use this site as a store or need their customer service you will be very sorely disappointed. Remember the only way to contact these people is via email form on the site and from my experience there is no one reading the email.
So in conclusion: use at your own risk. Or better yet stay far far away.
