The Bottom Line Was it good? Sure. Was it the second coming of the best rock and roll band in the world? "Oh My God no!"

Dear Axl,

I've long been a fan of Guns 'N' Roses. I've defended you when even most of your staunchest fans wouldn't have a thing to do with you. To wit:

* When it took so long for the Use Your Illusion discs to come out, I told people I wanted good music rather than new music.

* When The Spaghetti Incident came out, I thought it was nothing more than it was supposed to be: you guys paying tribute to musical heroes. I liked it, even though most people thought it was terrible.

* When you basically fired everyone in the band, I said "eh, give him a chance."

* When you debuted the new band, people said it lacked something. But from the first time I heard the Rock In Rio III Performance, I knew you had something truly special.

* When people ripped apart your triumphant return on the Video Music Awards because you were out of breath and had trouble with certain high notes.

But Axl, after last night, I don't know if I want to defend you anymore. You came to Boston for the first time since 1993, and I had eagerly shelled out good money for a sweet spot on the floor (read: tenth row or so). I had read all about your "tardiness," and I figured that you'd be on stage by 10 or so. But ten o'clock came and went. Then 10:30 came and went. It was 10:45 by the time you took the stage, in a Red Sox shirt no less, and your band ripped into Welcome to the Jungle.

And Axl, I have to give you credit. All night last night, that new band of yours played THE HELL out of every single song I saw. But there's the problem Axl. I was relying on public transpo, and I left early to make sure I got home (only to find out today that they ran extra trains after the show). I couldn't take the chance though Axl, so I missed the last 1/3 or so of the show, including what was according to so many reviews, the highlight of the night, the 3 guitar attack during Paradise City.

Buckethead was on fire last night, and the rest of the band seemed to be in just as fine form. But where was your voice Axl? What happened to it man? When you tried to hit the high notes, it just wasn't working for the most part. The new material sounds wonderful, especially Madagascar, which sits up there with Estranged and November Rain as one of your best epic songs ever.

To top it all off, you played 3/4 of Appetite for Destruction.

But there was something missing Axl. No, it wasn't Slash or Duff or Izzy or Matt. It wasn't the excitement of the crowd, because the crowd was so primed, that by the time the opening notes to Jungle hit, the f*cking roof just about got torn off in a musical moment that wasn't topped at any other point of the show last night. It was you Axl. Your voice was missing.

But don't worry Axl. I still had an ok enough time. Your new backing band saved you. And I really do hope that you'll find your voice soon so that I can see you in the form that Guns N Roses deserves to be heard in. And I'll still recommend your show...I'll just tell people to make late night arrangements and to pay for the cheapest seats.

Thanks anyways Axl,

One of your largest fans,
Matt
