I could not agree more. I find Hightower's book to be far out of the reach of any sense of reality. This was a class assignment at my college to write about what an Anti-Federalist would think about Hightower's book. Although I disagree with the book and the Anti-Federalist ideology, an interesting assignment nonetheless.

I gave this review a VH because it is well written and is not too hard to read. However, I do not agree at all with Mr. Hightower, of for that matter with you, bless your heart.

I agree that some of the decisions made by our lawmakers are very wrong. If a high official can be elected only on the basis of having an enormous amount of money and power, poor decisions will be, and have been made. But then, we do have the right to vote, do we not?

I cannot see what the Anti Federalists have to offer in replacement. Before labor laws were legislated, you had little children working 12 hours a day in sweat shops for very little money, for one example. There is another example in the coal mine industry, where the wages of the miner were eaten up because they had to buy all of their supplies from the company store. Elderly people, whose children were unable or unwilling to support them (if they had children) were sent to the Poor Farm - a place where even the poorest of nursing homes would seem like a paradise in comparison. Without government and rules every state would have different educational requirements, every state would have thier own laws and traffic rules. In the old west, because there were few rules, it became a haven for the criminals wherein the strong preyed on the weak.

Mostly it seems that Anti Federalists deplore the fact that they have to pay taxes. Well, so do I.
I know that Congress should hang their heads in shame for the manipulation of our tax dollars. But what is the solution? How can we pay for the billions of dollars of war products we need to defend ourselves without a fair contribution of taxes? My own personal idea (probably naive) would be to hold everyone responsible for manipulating the system for thier personal gain - and that includes billionaires and huge powerful companies as well.
