Jeffrey and Me: Confronting Boston's Whipping Boy
by beckytcy | Dec 07 '02
Remember that kid who caught the ball in Yankee Stadium? He goes to my school. I can't stop thinking about what I should have said.

Wow, I almost forgot about that kid. It's been like 8 or 9 years since that happened.

Anyways, I wish you had punched him. He was simply playing hooky from school and stuck his hand out into the field. That's even worse that that Chicago Cubs fan, Steve Bartman.

Oh well, I'm sure 99% of the some 280 million people in this country have forgotten him...forever. ESPN did do one last interview with him in summer 2003.

Being a Boston fan is all about holding grudges.

Thanks for your kind comment,

I can't believe you people have such lackluster lives that you can't let go something that happened 9 years ago. And to write in here where he goes to school, and that you want to kick him in the head... I'm afraid you are the one who needs a kick in the head.

This kid has been living his life under the umbrella of that day and now by writing his college and your desire to harm him you're just continuing to fuel the fire. Grow up, get a life, leave him alone, and HOPE that you don't do something one day that makes you the unwanted target of someone's attention.

You think Yankees suck? It's you people who suck. So redeem yourself and remove his name and college from your "essay"...then maybe someone besides your little group of like-minded warped reality friends will respect you.

That would be pretty interesting, but I'm not sure if he'd agree to it. Maybe I'll suggest it to the newspaper. I certainly wouldn't be the right person to conduct the interview since I am very biased. :)

More Interesting Than Hurting Him..... (Reply to this comment)

would be to interview him in depth at some point about what he was thinking at the time and how he views it all from today's perspective. It would probably make an unusual topic for a paper in one of your courses, or at least a unique Epinion!

There are so many people in Boston (my mom included) who claim that they never liked Roger Clemens even when he was on the Sox. I don't believe it, though. He was adored for his two 20 strikeout games and Cy Young Awards. Don't mention "Game 6" or I'll cry. There is no other Game 6 in my mind. Did you see the Seinfeld episodes when Elaine goes out with Keith Hernandez? Those are brilliant.

Thanks a lot for your comment, Moose! And you are totally right about not being both a Yankees and a Mets fan. You can't do that. My grandmother jumps on the bandwagon of whatever team is doing well at the moment, and it's so aggravating. In '86, I swear she was a Mets fan. I recall very clearly that she really liked Ron Darling. But she denies it now and says she has ALWAYS BEEN a Yankees fan. The Red Sox don't win because their organization is so negative. Having worked there, I didn't feel any winning vibes. Maybe now that they have new owners, they can turn things around.

Bah! Roger Clemens! But, I was much happier when he won for the Blue Jays than when he won for the Yanks

Roger Clemens is an interesting paradox for me. I love it when he wins, because I admire his dominating skill, and, as a baseball stats freak, can't wait for his 300th win. But I hate the man. Hate him. Even when he was a Jay.

There was a story going around that when he was taken out of Game 6 (c'mon, you know which Game 6 I'm referring to, right?), he went into the locker room to shave, thinking the win was in hand and wanting to look presentable for the post-Series interviews. The Mets saw this, and willed a win just to make the Rocket look like a chump. Mission: Accomplished.

Heh-heh...

My favorite player is Tom Glavine, so I might have to root for the Mets now! Well, at least when he pitches... I've always really liked David Cone, so it was awful when he was on the Yankees. I always hoped he would pitch a really good game, but that the Yankees would lose 1-0 or something.

I'm the world's biggest Mets fan, so you might not be fond of me as I regularly watch replays of that infamous Bill Buckner play in game 6 (poor guy, he had a decent career before then, but that's what he's going to be known for).

But every time the Yankees get kicked in the teeth by a supposedly "inferior" team, I am euphoric. Arizona and Anaheim come to mind. I'll root for anyone who plays against the Yankees any time and every time.

"Cool! Can you point him out to me? I've always wanted to kick him in the head," I said.

Hee-hee. Please tell me you really said that.

As a Blue Jays fan, I can't really relate to the storied rivalry the Yanks and the Bosox share. The Jays and the Yankees have had some ludicours moments. Mary O'Dowd butchering our National Anthem during an important series at Yankee Stadium back in 1985 jumps immediately to mind. And yeah, I guess I'd love to kick her in the head.

But I can't think of many horrific moments we've suffered at the hands of the Red Sox. Actually, I feel sorry for you people. After all, we were the ones who took Roger Clemens off your hands, just in time to watch him win back-to-back Cy Young awards (sorry).

Oh, I didn't mean to gloat so much in this comment, but when one's talking about the Red Sox, one can't help it, can one? ;)

Look on the bright side, Beck. You got to set foot on the grass at Fenway Park. I can't compete with that.

By the way: excellent piece...
