The Bottom Line Screw the traditional Citizen Kane and Casablana lists, The new generation of movies and movie critics are moving in and we actually take entertainment value into consideration. ;)

Wow, my top 10 favorite movies. I've figured and re-figured this list out to myself and to others so many times now that I should be able to easily say which movies would be on this list of mine and easily explain why each one is on there, but each time I think about it, it still makes me think very hard. It's only fitting for me to write an Epinion on it so I can finalize my stance on the issue. Anyway, on to the list:

1. Star Wars - A New Hope

After reading the title on this, you can probably figure out that I love Star Wars. The only thought involved here was just which Star Wars movie I was going to put as first, as the original three are just so good each in their own right. I've finally decided that that it is too hard to decide, so I am going to put them in the order of their release. A New Hope started it all, introducing us to a farmboy Luke following his dreams to become something more, to the ruthless Darth Vader choking out his victims, each time bringing a chill down your spine. This is a movie we can all relate to in one form or another, and was an instant classic with its innovative special effects which shattered the boundaries we knew in 1977. I can say without hesitation that nothing will ever, ever pass this up to take my number one place unless Good ol' George can pull a miracle with Episode three.

2. Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back

I hope you weren't expecting something else. This is many peoples' favorite Star Wars movie and I can understand why. Considered the darker of the trilogy, this movie oh-so-shines in plot. Not only do the bad guys more or less win at the end, but we get Darth revealing he's Luke's dad. I think this movie invented plot twists. I truly feel sorry for those who had to endure the pain that was three years of suspense while waiting for Return Of The Jedi to come out. Then again, I envy those people as well as they got to experience Star Wars at its best. Either way, this is a great film that should not be missed under any circumstances whatsoever.

3. Star Wars - Return Of The Jedi

Ah, and we finally get to the last movie of the original trilogy. I bet you're wondering if I am going to put the generally less-liked prequels next or if I am going to come up with something different...More than likely you cheated and looked ahead at what I put, cheater. (*Note...That last remark only applies if you actually did cheat and looked ahead) ;) Anyways, I remember way back when I was 6 and was looking around for a movie to watch. I saw a title on our movie shelf that read "Return Of The Jedi" and thought to myself 'Jedi...that sounds interesting!' Little did I know that this would be the start of a new love in my life. I remember watching it not really knowing what was going on, but the instant it got to C-3PO and R2-D2 walking along the Tatooine desert at the start I was immediately sucked in, even at such a young age. The chemistry between characters George Lucas collaborated in this was amazing. Shame the last in the saga was the first I watched, but luckily I was young enough to forget most of it by the time I watched the movies in the proper order years later. This was my favorite movie for the longest time, because of all the great action scenes and tremendous ending it brought to the legacy that is Star Wars.

4. The Matrix

SHOCK!!!!! HORROR!!!!! I put a non-Star Wars movie in my top 10 before the prequels! That's right, The Matrix is a better movie than Episode one or two. I may be obsessed, but at least I can use some reason. As I stated in my original Epinion of The Matrix, I originally thought this film was just going to be an unoriginal action movie that was going to get mediocre reviews.

Everybody: Dead wrong.

Yes, I was just as surprised as everyone else that an action thriller was getting good reviews when it came out, so I was forced to go see it. Now I own it on DVD and is prized in my collection. Come to think of it, The Star Wars trilogy has yet to come out on DVD. In the words of the Hurricane (For you few wrestling fans that still exist) whatsupwitdat? But once again I am getting off track. The Matrix is a great movie with an outstanding story and plot, and groundbreaking special effects. Come to think of it, waiting for Matrix 2 is much like it was for the people waiting for Return Of The Jedi to come out. Except not QUITE as tough. But almost. Hey, I convinced my English teacher to see this movie, who normally hates action films, so that should show for something on how much I like it.

5. Star Wars - Attack Of The Clones

Ah, that's better. Back to normal with good old Star Wars. I admit that I had pretty low hopes for this after Episode 1, but this was pleasantly surprisingly good. It was a little slow at parts, but being there at the 12:01 AM showing along with all the great Star Wars obsessed people such as myself was something beyond description and made the movie impossible to not enjoy. We get unbelievable fight scenes from a mass Jedi battle (what we have always wanted to see) to Yoda finally proving why he is the master. Great addition to the Star Wars saga that actually lived up to the hype.

6. Spaceballs

The next best thing to Star Wars is of course something mocking it. Done in good taste, and extremely funny, this makes number 6 on my list. The first time I saw this I probably laughed out loud at least 30 times, which has to be a record of some sort. We get Rick Morranus playing Dark Helmet which just makes the movie for me. Well casted and great writing make this a comedy classic, and a must-see for just about anyone familiar with Star Wars. We're still waiting on a sequel for this one, Mel. With Episode 1's release you have more than enough material to make another hilarious film.

7. Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

Much like the Star Wars movies, I had a hard time deciding which one of the classic Indiana Jones films I was going to use. I decided that while still a good movie, The Temple Of Doom isn't quite in the same league as Raiders or Crusade and I just decided I liked Crusade a little bit better. Probably because of the uncanny chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery (Who plays Jones' father). Raiders is also extremely good but I just couldn't find a place for it in my top 10. Anyway, the Indiana Jones Trilogy (and soon to be a fourth?) is a masterpiece collaborated on by two of the greatest minds the film industry has ever seen, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. It is quite a unique experience to watch these films, and this movie specifically, and I suggest that you do so if you haven't already.

8. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

I remember back during the Austin Powers craze when the movie first came out, and everyone started imitating him around every corner you walked by. I finally had to see it for myself, and to be honest at first I hated it. I had to give it another try and it got better and better progressively each time I saw it. By the time Austin Powers 2 came out I had to consider myself a fan of its smart humor and blatant jokes. I went to see this in theaters and The one part that strikes out to me is the Jerry Springer scene. I think this may have been the first time I have literally laughed so hard I couldn't breathe. The movie kept some great laughs in from there, and it has made it on my top 10.

9. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

When the previews for this movie came out I really didn't think it looked good at all. It looked like just a bunch of crude humor to appease a primarily teen audience that would end up stupid and unfunny. My friend, who was a big fan of Kevin Smith, dragged me along to the movie and I found it to be so much better than I expected. The amount of smart humor in this film is amazing and when the film is over you feel kind of like these two guys have been long time buddies of yours even though you've never met them in real life, which was unique to the film. Accompanied by some hilarious stuff as well as some smart crude humor, this movie has made it to the number 9 spot on my list.

10. Star Wars - The Phantom Menace

Ah, and what a fitting way to end the list. Once again we see Star Wars on here, and although I have slightly made fun of it throughout this, it is still a good film. The drawbacks (dialogue, Anakin's acting, and some slow parts) are easily masked by the outstanding battle and especially the lightsaber scenes. The critics absolutely killed this movie, and in all honestly I have to believe that the main reason people disliked the film is because of this. I know it's not on the same level as the others, but it's still not bad. I think it got unfairly judged since the hype was making it out to be the best movie of all time.

And there you have it, my top 10 list finally done. I wonder if this will still be up here 20 years from now so I can laugh and look back at some of my choices. But I do know one thing, Star Wars will still be in my number 1 spot. Hope you enjoyed the read!
