Hey, you like what you like. I liked Hudson Hawk too and I loved the "Swing on a Star" routine so I allow the guilty pleasure. Same with "The Tall Guy." Neither movie great but both enjoyable!
Hey, another person who agrees with me! Don't let Mr. Fienberg hear you say that, he's liable to go apesh-t.
If you recall, the movie that McRae was going to make within the movie was called, "Oh Brother, Where art Thou."
If you check out the full-length review I wrote on that movie, you'll see this fact come up in greater detail.
I predict that "Almost Famous" will not last on your list over the next five years
I predict a lot of these films will be pushed off the list in the next five years. Or, at least I hope they do. Since that would mean the next five years was full of top-flight, top 100-worthy films.
Thanks for the comments, as usual...

Congratulations on Sullivan's Travels. If you recall, the movie that McRae was going to make within the movie was called, "Oh Brother, Where art Thou." And now that prison scene makes a lot of sense.

Oh, Crispy, aren't we all allowed our guilty pleasures? Do I have to bring up the Powder Puff Girls again? Or (*gasp*) Red Dragon? ;)

Ah well, I guess being in Hong Kong too long has had a drastic effect on me
I think even Ang Lee himself has admitted that CT,HD, to an Eastern audience, would seem like cliched tripe, a story they've known for generations. But a Western audience, one that isn't familiar with the archetypes or the story, would find it fresh and original and exciting. Which we did. It's all about perspective.
Glad you liked the rest of the list, at least...

would personally watch Shelly Duvall do a striptease before ever laying eyes on it again, amigo!
See, now that does sound interesting. You can send me a tape of that, right? Jack? Hello?

Dude! (Reply to this comment)

How can films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon beat other films like North by Northwest and Casablanca? In all honesty, that film was the most overrated piece of tripe I've seen in a LOOOOONG time!
Ah well, I guess being in Hong Kong too long has had a drastic effect on me.
Great review though. Look forward to the rest of the countdown.

I love nearly every movie on this installment (can you guess which one wouldn't make my top 100;)?
Could it be... #75? Just a wild guess...
Glad you liked the rest of them, though. Thanks for the lean comments...

"Shockingly sweet and magical tale." That is the best thing I've ever read about that film
Thanks, Beck. Glad to know even my off-hand comments are golden to some ears. ;)
I am trying to picture you with long hair
It's best not to even try. Wasn't a pretty sight (I also had a raggedy goatee... ugh!).

Re: You want fodder? I'll give you fodder... (Reply to this comment)
by mfunk75
Sir, I want fodder, sir!
because "Dude, you raked The Tall Guy ahead of North by Northwest and Casablanca"
Yeah. What of it?
the more recent something is the more subjectice it is.
True. I'm finding that a lot of my picks are based not only on the merits of the films themselves, but the experiences I had watching the films. Because I can only (for the most part) see older films on DVD or VHS in the privacy of my own home (not the most visceral of experiences), they inevitably pale in comparisons to any big-screen viewings I've had. Rosemary's Baby, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, and several from the next installment were all seen on big screens, in one of Toronto's repertory cinemas. It certainly helps.
so I'm already in full effect by the time the "Playing Catch With Your Dead Father" thing starts
Well, yeah, me too. But it's that last moment ("Dad... wanna have a catch?") that pushes me over the edge every time.
my Best of the 1980s list, ... maybe, you know, finish the list.
Promises, promises. I've heard this many times before. Buckle down, Dan. It ain't gonna get writ by itself!
In your Toosie listing you mention most of the supporting characters, but not Gena Davis, who stands around in a bra and panties for a couple scenes.
But what else does she do? Frankly, Geena Davis never did it for me. Now Tootsie, there was a woman...
And Midnight Run was a better movie than Hudson Hawk when you were 13 (even though the latter hadn't been made yet) and it still is.
I love the frayed logic of this argument. How can I possibly offer dissent?
"Dude, The Tall Guy over Sullivan's Travels?"
Also, The Tall Guy over 2001. And A Hard Day's Night. Ha!
And Dan, why am I bothering to be vague about what's to come in the next installments, when you're just going to guess them correctly each time? Stop reading my mind!
Love the comments... keep 'em coming...

i would urge you to see 'the lady eve' before making any judgements on sturges' masterpiece. not that 'sullivan's travels' isn't great, it most definitely is, but 'the lady eve' is not without its own great charm.
Yeah, I know. I'll get to it. I really will. One day.
i think it's a great, silly, big mess of fun
Hey! No fair trumping my own 200-word mini-review with a perfectly-worded 10-word one! Long live the Hawk...

.....I love nearly every movie on this installment (can you guess which one wouldn't make my top 100;)? Both Field of Dreams and Shawshank have me blubberin' every time - Lancaster stepping over the line, Robbins emerging triumphant from the sewer - love it! BTW - On Golden Pond was my Mom's favorite movie of all time, so I have a special spot for that one, haven't seen it mentioned in a long time - these lists are great fun, I hope they are as much fun to write as they are to read (word count of comment approx. 1000 - I ain't ever gonna be lean).

You want fodder? I'll give you fodder... (Reply to this comment)

Anyway, the run of newer films here make this list much less problematic because there's no temptation to be all "Dude, you ranked Beverly Hills Cop 2 higher than Intolerance!" That isn't to say that such comparisons can't be made (because "Dude, you raked The Tall Guy ahead of North by Northwest and Casablanca") but he hide them better. This part of the list is mostly dedicated to more recent films and the more recent something is the more subjectice it is. All I know is that Jaws wouldn't even make a light snack of Bobby Fischer or the little kid who played the chess prodigy in the movie.
Personally, I start tearing up either with James Earl Jones's "People will most definitely come" speech or when Frank Whalley crosses the line to become Burt Lancaster, so I'm already in full effect by the time the "Playing Catch With Your Dead Father" thing starts. Unfortunately, I just rewrote the Field of Dreams comment from my Best of the 1980s list, so now I'll have to freshen it up. And maybe, you know, finish the list.
What else? In your Toosie listing you mention most of the supporting characters, but not Gena Davis, who stands around in a bra and panties for a couple scenes. Who knew that one day she'd both win an Oscar and star in Stuart Little 2.
And Midnight Run was a better movie than Hudson Hawk when you were 13 (even though the latter hadn't been made yet) and it still is.
Ah screw it, "Dude, The Tall Guy over Sullivan's Travels?" I hope the ghost of Preston Sturges haunts you in your sleep.
On your next list, though, I'm looking forward to Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, Camelot (get it? nights? knights?), The Little Mermaid, and... I dunno... a double bill of The Seventh Seal and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey...
Always a great read...
Dan
