you are as rational as you seem, then searching for meaning in the supernatural, will, I think, continue to let you down.

I try to take hope in the real sources of all the beneficence you allude to - humans. They are, of course, also the source of horrors.

The absurd concept I choose to place my faith in is that humanity may somehow find an evolutionarily stable solution which includes significantly less superstition, ignorance, greed, violence and hatred than the one we currently live within.

True, the evidence supporting this faith is minuscule, but at least it doesn't flatly contradict everything our species has learned about the world in the past 500 years.

"Supernatural," it seems to me, is a specialized subset of "Imaginary."

Excellently written and thought-provoking piece.

A Santa, and He is not only present one night a year. He lives in our neighbors, the boy scout that drags the little lady across the street (even if that is not where she was going) He lives in the cry of a newborn, a flower peeking through the snow, the stories of an old soldier.

You see Him daily, and more importantly He sees you. You have much talent and faith my friend, a blessed combination. Glad I stumbled on your work, or did I stumble?

Hi,

I believe there is a God. He gave us free will and I'll bet he is very distressed about how His world has evolved. Shame on us. But I don't think He has deserted us.

I've never met the real Santa Claus but I like to think there are a lot of Santas out there bringing joy to children.

Nice writing!

I have no trouble reconciling the fact that someone non-religious could be as spiritual as this article seems to indicate you are. I consider myself a truly devout Christian because I still believe in God DESPITE the bad experiences I've had with organized religion.

Maybe Santa Clause IS God. Whether or not you believe Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny or the Great Pumpkin is God, is (I think) irrelevant. Whether you can believe in the existence of something greater than yourself, and despite your inability to palpate said phenomena via your 5 physical senses IS (I think) relevant.

Merry Christmas Rich,

I like that...:-)

I know I have heard it before, but never so well used...:-)

"People I meet at parties, once they discover how I make my living, feel compelled to tell me about the low regard in which they hold advertising. But in return for my listening to their complaints, they have to answer some questions too. I ask them what they think of Hallmark's advertising, or Kraft's, or the Raid advertising with those cute bugs. Oh, well, that's different." —John O'Toole

There's only a two letter difference between Santa and Santana? While Carlos may play a better guitar lick, Santa can kick his butt in the home delivery department. That's all the wisdom I have for today. And probably for the next several weeks.

Thanks for going all Hallmark on us. We all could use a little Christmas.

Merry Christmas

I hope you WILL see Santa for the first time this year. At our age, wouldn't it be a miracle?

Let me know if you spot him, and Merry Christmas!

you said...
"So, each Christmas Eve, I wait and watch.

I pray with all my being that I see him.

Maybe this will be the year.
"

Substitute Linus and Halloween and this could be an identical wait for 'The Great Pumpkin'.

you said...
"Since we, this most imperfect of species, continue to exist, I must assume that God does not. Or if He does, He has certainly, and rightfully, turned away from us."

Or we have turned away from Him.

I am not the most religious person in the world. But the very things that make a "single brief glimpse of pure, unspoiled benevolence and innocence" even thinkable, make those other 51 weeks of the year bearable.

I can not doubt that even in viewing all the ignobility and "ubiquitous natural evil that mankind has constantly visited upon itself" that you have seen, you have also witnessed the good, the tender, the 'deserving of a God's love' moments.

I hope—pray—that your 'Cindy Lou Who eyes' see your Santa this year...:-)

That was beautiful.

The season overwhelms my senses and permeates my being until the feeling and spirit of Christmas is almost palpable.

And I feel the same.

To me, that is the spirit of Santa Claus, however you celebrate the season. You take the time and special care that falls by the wayside throughout the rest of the year. But if you can feel it during the holidays, the spirit of Santa Claus is always there, waiting to peek out all year long.

And that's a very good reason to hope for humanity.

Have a wonderful Christmas Rich.

Love,

Lynne

Me too. But remember the Four Ages of Man:

1) You believe in Santa Claus.
2) You don't believe in Santa Claus.
3) You are Santa Claus.
4) You look like Santa Claus.
