The Bottom Line If many plants die like this, we will not be able to exist.
Air is made up of invisible gases. One gas, called nitrogen, makes up most of the air. Another plentiful gas is called oxygen. Air is also made up of small amounts of other gases, such as carbon dioxide and ozone. Air makes life possible. We cannot live without air. We breathe air through our nose and into our lungs. The oxygen travels from our lungs to every cell in our body. Oxygen helps our bodies by producing energy from food. Air also can help plants and animals live. Every animal inhales oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide. All plants inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. That helps keep the proper balance of gases in the air. Air pollution is dirty air full of particles, chemicals, and dirt that could make us sick, make it hard for us to breathe, or even cause death. Both humans and nature pollute the air. Few ways humans pollute the air are by using automobiles which exhaust fumes, heating systems and factories that both give off smoke. Examples of natural air pollution are volcanic eruptions and dust that they sometimes carry out to far distances. Air pollution is harmful to people. The chemical reaction of car exhaust fumes and sunlight create a gas called ozone. However, ozone is harmful to us by making eyes watery and irritating the nose, throat, and lungs. When ozone combines with a fog, it forms smog. Smog can make older people, babies, and people with lung diseases very sick or even cause death. Chemical pollutants from factories can cause serious lung cancer. We can control outdoor air pollution by using lead-free gasoline, using devices that remove chemicals, dirt, particles, and poisonous gases from smoke before it goes out of the smokestack. Indoor air pollution can also be controlled by opening windows, using fans to circulate the air, put vents over gas stoves will remove gas fumes. House plants also absorb air pollutants. Plants cannot sustain air pollution. |
