Ugh - those bosoms bursting out of those fake Chinese bodices really repelled me - that, as far as I know, isn't at all reflective of Chinese sense of beauty and modesty. The chongsam is an example of genuine Chinese sartorial elegance and sensuality - a fitting silk dress closed up to the neck with a stiff collar, short sleeves, and a long slit down the side of the legs. Bosoms, I take it, were never big with the Chinese.
Enjoyed reading your hilarious review - although I don't think I'll waste my money on this example of wasteful excess. The air's gone to his head, and priorities are now all askew. Eeek.

And a bosom bonanza it most certainly was...what was the man thinking? We saw this maiden aunt looking somewhat in shock as the audience dispersed to the parking lot. I'm sure there's a target audience Zhang had in mind, but as to what and where it may be, I cannot say.
Glad you enjoyed the review. As ever, thanks for reading/rating/commenting!
All the best,

Excellent review here in all respects, and of course one with which I wholeheartedly agree.
Special mention for your many evocations of the bosom bonanza peculiarity (also, as you know, a feature of my review), above all this thought:
If there were an Academy Award for the Best Body Part, Li Mans flawless and shapely mounds would be the hands-down winner, with Gong Lis formidable pair sure to garner, at the very least, an honourable mention.
That's a great way to put it-- it did seem as though the breasts were separate players in the drama, especially those of these two women, and indeed my wife and I frequently laughed and elbowed each other as the bosoms vied desperately for their Oscars.
All in all, a thorough and very enjoyable read!

I know, I know, you're still in shock so soon after watching the wretched thing. Take a deep breath and cleanse your eyes and mind with some of his earlier works. Too soon? I understand. It's very sad when a great man falls to pieces like that. How hath the mighty fallen, alas, alas...
Still, I think we should write to him and tell him to stop. How else could he know? What if he continues in the same vein? The horror!!
And what about that song at the end? trust12345's review reminded me of it (I must have blocked it out somehow) and I was horrified all over again. I could not run from that cinema fast enough, I'm telling ya...

Just saw the film yesterday...and it reminds me again and again why I can't stand Zhang Yimou. He has lost it, I don't know why he has to constantly prove a point and make these unnecessary but extravagant dramas of Ancient China and seeing people flying around in the air. I mean, once or twice is ok...but now it's out of control. He's pi***** me off more and more...and so is Gong Li. I can't stand her, why does she have to be in EVERY Zhang Yimou movie?
I wanna see Zhang direct a film like a Hong Kong style to it like Election, or One Nite in Mongkok or something like that
