The Bottom Line 2002 was a great year for music.
* Number one, first and foremost, happy holidays and all that jazz to everyone here at Epinions. * "They say we're the next U2, which must be why we feel so at home here in Boston with the Irish. But we're not the new U2..." Folks, that's Chris Martin of Coldplay at a recent show in Boston with the biggest "duh" quote of the year. Damn straight Coldplay isn't the new U2. You know what Coldplay is? Boring. Nothing more, nothing less. New U2, whatever music critic gave them that title should be beaten severely, followed by being forced to listen to Achtung Baby over and over again so he realizes that Coldplay could never make music that good. Ugh... * Far be it from me to like Jennifer Lopez or Justin Timberlake videos, but both of their new ones are great in their own little way. Justin's video dealing with Britney's possible infidelity is ballsy, period. And J Lo's video, shot with papparazzi cameras, is a very cool idea. Thumbs up to both of them. * How the hell I forgot to mention this in my last column I'll never know, but is the whole "Scott Stapp beaten by ex-wife" story not the best offstage music story of the year? Jesus that's classic. I guess Hilary really knows how to reach out and touch someone... * In what is not a big surprise, The Vines seemingly self destructed in Boston last week at a radio sponsored Xmas show. After Interpol dazzled the audience, the Vines came out and basically stunk up the joint. People were leaving in droves, and then, during Ain't No Room, lead vocalist Craig "dumbass" Nicholls warbled about the stage, nailing his bassist in the head. His bassist proceded to throw Nicholls into the crowd, where he followed and the two got into a fist fight. Unfortunately, the rumors of the band being banned from the club they were playing is not true. Even more unfortunately, the venue manager stuck up for the band, saying "he doesn't finish a lot of shows, but they played all their hits." What a joke. * It was on that same night that Moby got stomped by two fans after his own show at a different club as part of the same radio station sponsored night. Honestly, it really is good to see that Boston doesn't like morons like Craig Nicholls and Moby. And then, apparently a few days later, Moby ended up in the same hotel as Eminem and his entourage. Fearing another beat down, Moby moved to another venue. He also said he held no ill will towards the culprits who beat his a*s down in Boston. What a loser... * Is anyone really surprised that Guns N Roses canceled their US tour? I mean honestly, everything I hear pegs Buckethead as hating Axl's guts and not being able to wait until his contract is up. However, band spokepeople say the band is still intact, that no one left the group, and that the new disc will come out next spring...just like the last 5 springs it was supposed to come out. * Besides the new Justin video, it hasn't been a good few weeks for Britney. Pepsi just dumped her and picked up Beyonce Knowles from Destiny's Child. Another few seconds off the ever ticking "time is up for Britney" clock. * Good news for fans of the ultra awesome 90s alternative rock band Jane's Addiction...the new album is coming next summer. It's tentatively titled Hypersonic, and with any luck, it will get rid of this garage rock trend just as their first album helped usher out the awful hair bands of the 1980s. * Speaking of Jane's, their guitarist, Dave Navarro, is apparently playing on a couple of songs on Michelle Branch's new record, to be released in April of 2003. Damn that could be GOOD. * R.E.M. apparently debuted a new tune at a surprise show in Vancouver recently. To the surprise of many, it apparently doesn't suck, which would be a change of pace for the legendary band, whose last album, 2001's Reveal most certainly did suck. * 80s metal fans will be in HEAVEN in 2003. Whitesnake is going out in the first part of the year with The Scorpions. But the really big news is that a reformed TWISTED SISTER will be a part of the annual Poison tour this year. Makeup and everything folks. "We're not gonna take it..." * In an interesting collaboration, Iggy Pop and Green Day did a pair of tracks together for Pop's new album, due out in the second quarter of next year. My interest is piqued... * In a lawsuit that is right up there with the Backstreet Boys latest, David Lee Roth is suing Van Halen for back royalties. You know, I wish Dave would shut up, put together another "Sam and Dave" tour, but this time, with the right backing band: Van Halen. Me still thinks that VH will reunite with Sammy, as Eddie will realize he has to swallow his pride and apologize for making the biggest boneheaded mistake of his career. * Ugh. Nickelback has apparently collaborated with Dimebag Darrell of Pantera and Kid Rock on a cover of Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting). Gag me. * Speaking of Kid Rock, he apparently has not one, but two new albums done. Can you FEEL the excitement kids, CAN ya? * And lastly, here's hoping everyone finds that one album they want under their Christmas tree...even if it's The Vines... |
