| mgscmwa's Full Review: Deja Vu |
Déjà vu is a unique film. Filmed in post-Katrina New Orleans, it presents a really new take on a familiar concept for films déjà vu. Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) is the lead investigator on a terrorist act on a New Orleans cruise boat killing hundreds of people including many military men and women and their families.
When Jack McCready (Bruce Greenwood) and Agent Pyzwarra (Val Kilmer) reveal a new and secret time machine investigative technique to Carlin, the investigation takes a odd turn. By looking back in time, Carlin discovers who the terrorist is, Oerstadt (Jim Caviezel). The terrorist is entangled with a beautiful young woman, Claire (Paula Patton). It is not long before Carlin is also attracted to and entangled with Claire also.
There are many twists and turns in this film. We learn how changing incidents in the past can actually make the events occur. Carlin learns this, the hard way. The film takes the viewer on a ride of ups and downs, turns, and fast paced action, the film is hardly a masterpiece of cinematography but it an entertaining and action packed film. It is not as predictable as one might imagine, and this adds to the excitement of the film.
Denzel Washington is as expected wonderful in this film. He seems to be able to make any part he plays a success. Do not expect to see him on Oscar Day, but he was still believable and impressive in this film. Val Kilmer was interesting and very believable as Agent Pyzwarra. The slightly heavy Kilmer looked and acted the part excellently. Paula Patton is a beautiful woman and played that part well also. She was not anything to write home about so to speak, but still she was good. Adam Goldberg was very good in a small supporting part of Denny, a technician on the inside track of the new déjà vu investigative technique. Goldberg always adds a sense of humor to even the most serious of roles. I always enjoy seeing him, even in as small of a part as he had in this film.
Déjà Vu is a very good film. If you like suspense and action this film would be your cup of Tea for sure. This was a good, unique, and interesting film. The topic was not a new concept, but this film did have a few new twists in its plot. All and All, not a bad film.
