Thanks, glad you like them.
As far as getting promo CDs, other than by selling or review them somewhere, I don't know how to get them. But there are web sites like Jazz Review out there that need reviewers. I sent them my epinions on Sun Ra & Miles Davis & they brought me on board. I don't get paid--I don't see how they can be making much money, though, so I'm philosophical about that--but I do get CDs, and it's pretty cool to get to talk to heroes like Roscoe Mitchell & Marian McPartland. Also, I've used some of those pieces as samples to send to people who have paid me money to write, so it's kind of like interning, too.

As for post Y2K jazz, there's a lot of good stuff out there. You rightly mention the Sex Mob, I'd add Jason Moran, James Carter, Steve Turre, David Sanchez, Greg Osby, Daniel Carter, David S. Ware--lots of people making good records in jazz. Kenny Garrett, Brad Mehldau (although Largo, his latest, is terrible)--I think jazz is in good shape artistically.

Nice Jazz Review pieces; i've heard most of the McPartland shows you discussed, the Oscar Petterson session was inparticularly good. Damn but if that chick wasn't one helluva looker back in the day (of course you've seen A Great Day in Harlem).

While i buy dozens of jazz titles each year i rarely buy anything with a post-2000 imprint (my last one was the Vandermak 5's Burn the Incline and while interesting, haven't listened to it much since (although, i have been jones-ing bigtime to nail me some Sex Mob).

Besides writing for a rag, how does one get themselves on somebody’s "Free Promo" list?
