The Bottom Line There is no bottom line. Just read.

Well, it’s the end of another year. We’ve been introduced to a whole lot of new artists and bands this year, and some artists and bands have disappeared of the face of the earth. We’ve cried and we’ve laughed, we’ve had good times and we’ve had bad times. We’ve had our ups and downs, we’ve listened to some really good music, and we’ve listened to cacophonous rubbish *coughJenniferLopezcough*.. Anyway, here’s my list of the best of the best 2002, and it’s the first part of a trilogy in the Steal This Music Review! W/O, hosted by the fabulous Thevoid99

Here’s Part I : The Best Music Of 2002

Here are the nominees for best artist 2002:

1. Eminem
2. Tori Amos
3. Michelle Branch
4. Christina Aguilera
5. Norah Jones

And the winner is: Tori Amos. It was a close race, but in the end the 39 year old from North Carolina won. After a year in hibernation and a couple of years since we heard her sing her own stuff, Tori returned with Scarlet’s Walk, an opus which is her best album to date. Eminem made his movie debut with 8 Mile, a movie which most of us are very much content with. He also had a few great hits, including Lose Yourself, and Cleaning Out My Closet and Without Me from his album The Eminem Show. Michelle Branch got a breakthrough with her smash hits Everywhere and All You Wanted, and she is an artist we hope to see more of in many years to come. Just when we thought we had seen the worst of Christina Aguilera, she returned with the raunchy song and video Dirrty, which truly lives up to its name. But it is a complete misrepresentation of her mature, soulful and diverse album Stripped, which shows us what a true talent Christina really is. Newcomer Norah Jones made a stellar debut with her album Come Away with Me, a gorgeous album filled with jazz ballads, and also one of the best albums this year.

The nominees for band of the year 2002 are... :

1. White Stripes
2. Queens of the Stone Age
3. Flaming Lips
4. Tool
5. System of a Down

And the winner is: Queens of the Stone Age, which released their album Songs for the deaf in August 2002, a follow-up to the excellent Rated R They definitely don’t follow any trends, but make timeless hard rock which will be enjoyed in years to come. White Stripes became famous almost over night with their perfect 2 minute video for the cutesy garage song Fell In Love With A Girl, and the album they released last year, White Blood Cells was recognized for what it really is, a true masterpiece. Flaming Lips returned with their fun and light-hearted album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which makes one feel so good inside that it’s almost unbelievable. Tool hasn’t released anything new this year, but the album they released last year, Lateralus still has a great impact on many people, myself included. System Of A Down returned with the follow-up to their magnificent Toxicity, Steal this album!, a compilation of songs which didn’t make it to their Toxicity album, but it is equally good nonetheless.

Let’s see what albums are nominated for best album 2002... :

1. System of a Down – Steal this album!
2. Audioslave – Audioslave
3. Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the deaf
4. Tori Amos – Scarlet’s Walk
5. White Stripes – White Blood Cells

And the award goes to: Tori Amos with her opus Scarlet’s Walk. Filled with 18 highly personal songs about her character, Scarlet, discovering America is the best album I’ve heard in the last 2 years. This album is so complete; it’s diverse with deep, meaningful lyrics, perfect instrumentation and a divine singer. It absolutely blew my mind, and I am sure it will blow your mind too if you listen to it.
Queens of the Stone Age had a great comeback with Songs for the deaf, filled with hard rock music at its best. System of a Down did not disappoint at all, and their album Steal this album! just proved that they are one of the best rock/metal bands around. Audioslave, a.k.a Rage against the Soundgarden, consisting of ¾ of Rage against the Machine and Chris Cornell from Soundgarden finally hooked up and the result is shockingly good. Filled with hard rock it’s more melodic than RatM ever was and Chris Cornell’s magnificent voice. White Stripes are one of those great bands which helps us bring rock’n’roll back, and they made the best garage/rock’n’roll album this year with White Blood Cells

The nominees for Best Song 2002 are... :

1. Tori Amos – Carbon
2. White Stripes – Hotel Yorba
3. Christina Aguilera – Walk Away
4. Norah Jones – Don’t Know Why
5. Queens of the Stone Age – No One Knows

And the winner is once again Tori Amos for her song Carbon, where everything is simply perfect. It is truly Tori at her best, but the most remarkable thing about the song are the outstanding lyrics; they really make you think a whole lot before you understand what the song is about.
White Stripes had a whole lot of great songs on their album, one of the songs that were remarkable were Hotel Yorba. Rock’n’roll which will make you get up and dance the minute you hear it! Queens of the Stone Age and their song No One Knows is almost hypnotic, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever heard before. It’s rock mixed with.. well.. it seems everything! Norah Jones, the jazz prodigy and her Jesse Harris song Don’t Know Why is such a beautiful song, oozing with soul and emotion, and Norah sounds like a goddess. Christina Aguilera.. well.. wouldn’t expect to have her at my list, but Walk Away is a truly beautiful song. She’s written it herself, and it’s about being in a violent relationship, but she can’t walk away. Heart-wrenching lyrics and Christina’s emotional voice makes this the
blues song of the year.

Most Anticipated Albums of 2003 are... :

1. Radiohead
2. Tapeworm
3. Alicia Keys
4. The Strokes
5. White Stripes

And the winner is.. well, there are no winners here. I’m not quite sure which album I anticipate the most, but I think it might be the new Alicia Keys album. After Tori Amos and Tool she’s my favorite artist, and waiting for the follow-up to Songs In A Minor is inhuman. Woohoo.. and Radiohead will be back. It’s going to be nice to see what they do this time around; it’s always a great and positive surprise to see how they’ve evolved. The Strokes will also be back, and it’s going to be fun to see if they can make an equally good or better album than Is this it. White Stripes will also be back. I’ve heard they’ve been working on a lot of new stuff for the past few months, and I can’t hardly wait to see if their new material is as good as the one on White Blood Cells and De Stijl. And last but not least, Tapeworm, a collaboration between Nine Inch Nails and Maynard from Tool. Nine Inch Nails are absolutely not bad, and Maynard is a true genius, so it’s going to be fun to see what they accomplish together.

The nominees for the sexiest artist are ... :

1. Michelle Branch
2. Avril Lavigne
3. Alicia Keys
4. Jennifer Lopez
5. Christina Aguilera
6. Kylie Minogue
7. Norah Jones

And the winner is : Alicia Keys! The sexiest woman alive, and well, no need to say more about her. I would have placed Jennifer Lopez on top if she wasn’t so incredibly stupid and made that gruesome album This Is Me... Then. Seems like somebody needs to go home to the block and stay there. Michelle Branch is simply beautiful, but she can’t match up to good ole Alicia. Kylie Minogue is just so yummy. Never thought I would have a 33 year old woman on my list, but she just keeps on getting sexier and sexier. Avril Lavigne is just cool. She’s a tomboy, and that’s what I love about her. She manages to keep her femininity but at the same time she has awesome kick@$$ style. Christina Aguilera is really a pretty woman underneath it all. Maybe people would realize that if she didn’t dress raunchy and that gawd awful whorish make up. Norah Jones I just added because she is a cute, nifty little thing.

And that’s the best of everything 2002. Maybe you can check out some of it, and maybe you’ll end up liking it as well? Let’s hope so. When you’re done checking out the stuff I have on my lists, make sure that you check out the other participants as well. I’m sure their lists are filled with great stuff as well!
The second part in the trilogy is the worst music of 2002, and in the final part we take a look the best Epinions writers this year. So stay tuned!
