The Bottom Line Avoid the MX, theres very little good about it. Playing games at high resolutions? forget it. Go for Geforce TI/GTS/Ultra instead
Do you own a video card? Of course you do, all computers are required to have one, but thats not the main question, but HOW it run is. Whenever you play games or run rendered benchmarks, do you have to put everything at the lowest resolution (320*240) to play it at acceptable speeds? If you do, maybe you should consider getting a new video card. So you open a computer parts magazine and everywhere you see advertisments of video cards featuring the Nvidia MX chipset. Then looking at the price, you're amazed at the number of features it offers for such a cheap ticket price, but the question is, should you buy it? Well, unfortunately, the answer is no. Why no you ask. The answer is simple, because the price is not worth the long term investment, because in a year or two, you'll be back playing games at the lowest resolutions again. The MX series is basically a cut down version of the Geforce series. What the advertisement doesnt tell you is that MX-es have lower clock speeds, slower ram (possibly even SDRAM (Single Data Rate)) and an extremely few features for its price. In benchamarking programs such as 3DMark2001 SE, the MX shows how limited it is. On identical systems, the MX is at par with the Geforce at low resolutions of 640*480 and 800*600. As the resolution increase, the limited MX bus slacks and performance is impacted. The performance difference between the original Geforce 2/4 (GTS/TI/Ultra) and the Geforce 2/4MX is shown at high resolutions, such as 1280*1024 with FSAA (Full Screen Anti-Aliasing) enabled on popular video stressed games such as Unreal Tournament 2003. The MX runs with horrible frame rates at that level. So back to the original question, if you're opting for a new video card, save up your money for the TI series, they'll last long and worth the investment more. |
