The Bottom Line Read this to find out how I feel about this controversial and much-debated subject.
Note: This was originally going to be left as a comment for Chantilly20's excellent book review called Gianna Aborted!!, which can be found by going here: http://www.epinions.com/content_68853730948 However, I soon realized that it was developing into a full-scale Epinion and decided to post it as such. First off, I'm also pro-life. If things went my way, there would be a way to replace any sort of pregnancy termination with the removal of whatever is there and giving it to someone who would love to be pregnant. In the case of someone who really wants her baby but would be put into danger by carrying a child to term, I would want an artificial womb that would be able to grow her child for her. Said artificial womb would also come in handy for growing a baby where the pregnancy was the result of a rape or unfamiliar partner so that you wouldn't be impregnating someone wanting a child with a disease such as A.I.D.S. In an ideal (as ideal as we could be in this mortal realm) world, choosing not to abstain from sex outside of marriage wouldn't be outlawed, nor would people who do be shamed. Even so, it would be discouraged instead of promoted. You don't have to have an attitude of "looking down on" and/or "pointing a finger at" those who do in order to get across to your kids that it's wiser not to. I was blessed to know this woman who was born in 1885 and grew up in a home with a very unconventional mother. There was little doubt among those who knew and loved her that Ma Rogers was not only a good Christian but one who might be compared to Mother Teresa if she were living today. However, there were some things she did that had tongues wagging--not only in the Baptist church of which she was a member, but, also, out in the community. The main one of these things was that she smoked a corncob pipe. Nelle told me that little things like this didn't seem to disgrace her mother to too many people--but, one day, she did something that almost got her kicked out of church. There was a young lady in the community--probably, just about Tina's age--who "got in trouble" with some man. When this happened, she was no longer welcome at church and was even kicked out of the family home by her parents. Of course, the man wasn't about to marry her, either. That was when Ma Rogers took a very courageous step for that time and the little village in which she lived: She took the young lady into her own home, became a second parent to her, and was as excited about the coming baby as if she had been its own grandma! As I implied before, the other people--outside of the girl and her (Ma Roger's) own immediate family--were "outraged" to the point of being tempted to come to her home to tar and feather her. In time, though, people began to realize that what Ma Rogers had done was exactly as Jesus would want her to do! Anyway, back to the original train-of-thought, I believe that more people would be inclined to continue unexpected pregnancies if they knew that the spirit of pro-life would continue beyond the exit door of the womb. Even so--until such a time is a reality--I would have to leave open a small door during the first trimester to allow for "abortion-on-demand." Of course, when a pregnancy becomes dangerous, there is no time whatsoever that I would want someone to be denied an abortion, even if a full-term baby were about to be born. In order to save the life of the mother, I wouldn't think twice about whether or not to carve the baby into pieces for easy and safe removal, though it would make me sad. Fortunately, such a situation where this is warranted is rare. In the case of Gianna, she was, obviously, too fully-formed to have been aborted. I know that abortion-on-demand is done legally here in the USA until about the sixth month in "certain cases"--and even beyond that point with "the doctor's good judgment." This should never be! Abortion-on-demand (for non-medical reasons) should be limited to the first-trimester--and the climate of our society should be changed in order to cut way down on (if not completely do away with) what is seen by unexpectedly-pregnant women as the need for it. There are all kinds of reasons to get an abortion, and those reasons should be compassionately done away with. If you go to my profile page here, you'll find instructions for getting to my port (short for portfolio and similar to the profile pages here) at Stories.com (changing its name to Writing.com with the arrival of 2003). Listed in my port, find AJ's Epinions.com Journal, and you'll find entries related to both sites (plus others) with the emphasis on Epinions.com. One of the entries will contain information re: Chantilly20's review, this Epinion, and a message forum I have going on the issue of the true meaning of "Pro-Life"--with a place to click on to get to the forum being found at the bottom of an editorial about the same. I hope you will find at least parts of it to be helpful--and that you might even decide to become a member of Stories.com/Writing.com in order to contribute your thoughts to the forum if for no other reason. Thank you for reading. |
