The Bottom Line The "Dream Within A Dream" tour was an amazing show filled with dancing, singing, and pyro that included many of Britney's new and old hits and many elaborate sets.
Event: Britney Spears, Dream Within a Dream Tour 2002 Venue: Philips Arena Place: Atlanta, GA on December 15, 2001 For those of you who have not had the chance to see Britney live, I highly recommend you do the next time she goes on the road. Her shows are packed with energy, and the crowd gets really excited. The venue was sold out with Britney fans of all ages. There were teenagers there with friends and parents taking their children. "Dream Within A Dream" is the name of the tour, and each song includes an elaborate theme similar to a dream. From nightmares and exotic jungles to a giant child's music box and a waterfall, the show features all different types of dreams. A group named LFO opened the show. Normally, O-Town or P. Diddy were the opening acts, but neither were at this show. LFO performed a somewhat long set including their singles "Summer Girls" and "Girl on TV" on the second stage. After much anticipation and the opening act concluded, Britney's show began. The introduction included a video collage of people talking about their dreams and lots of pyro. The stage spans half the length of the arena. There is a smaller, second stage in the middle of the arena, with a long walkway connecting to the main stage with several levels and pathways that emerge from it. The band breaks into "Oops I Did It Again", and Britney slowly emerges from the stage on a revolving platform. It is a better, harder version than is on the CD. Pyrotechnics explode from all parts of the stage, and Britney lowers from the platform dressed in a large black coat, as well as black pants and a top. The theme of this song is a nightmare, and all the dancers are dressed in dark, strange costumes. The dancing and vocals are outstanding. "Crazy" After Oops, Britney takes the jacket off and goes right into "Crazy". Besides a slowed-down first verse, this is similar to the album version. Britney is first tied up in a rope by her dancers, but escapes. Complex choreography is included. Britney is also surrounded by mirrors at one point, showing how Britney sometimes does not like the media's negative energy that surrounds her. The song ends by dancing on the second stage. Britney says "I wanna welcome you to a world where anything, and I mean anything can happen." She then emerges into the stage, and her dancers break into a routine. "Overprotected" Britney emerges in a new body suit outfit, and there is a futuristic theme. Music Box Medley One of my personal favorite parts of the show, this is where Britney shows her innocent side. One of her backup singers introduces the story of a girl hoping to one day find her true love. A large music box lights up on the stage, and Britney emerges wearing a white outfit with a ballerina skirt over it and singing an excellent version of "Born To Make You Happy," which is one of my favorite Britney songs on her first album that was never released. She sings the first verse and first chorus. After this, the music box opens revealing many colorful lights. Britney removes the ballerina bottom, and puts on a fur coat over the white outfit. She breaks into the second half of "Lucky". After "Lucky", Britney changes coats and performs "Sometimes" dancing with a partner. She then goes back into the music box, leaving the stage. Her backup singer concludes the story with a line "until she finds her true love, a dream will do just fine". "Boys" and "Stronger" After the Music Box, Britney returns wearing black pants and a top to perform "Boys", which is themed after a club. Britney puts on a paint jacket and gets right into "Stronger". This song contains lots of fireworks and dancing. "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" A grand piano is brought onstage, and Britney sits and talks with the crowd before getting into this ballad. She is wearing the same black outfit, and bubbles are blown on the stage during the song. "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" Next, Britney comes out wearing a colorful jacket, top, and pants and gets on a rising platform to perform this song. The platform rises above the stage, and travels across the arena. When she reaches the second stage and finishes the song, she jumps 20 feet in the air with a chord off the platform and is lowered onto the second stage. "What Its Like To Be Me" and "Lonely" Britney removes the jacked and performs "What Its Like to Be Me" on the second stage. With lots of dancing, Britney heads back to the first stage to break into the next song. "Lonely" includes Britney fighting herself on a giant TV screen that is lowered onto the stage. The screen rises to the ceiling before the dance break, and then Britney fights with her dancers. An explosion of fireworks and smoke ends this song. Her dancers and band are introduced at this point. "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" Britney emerges at the top of the stage and sings this ballad in a white dress as her dancers perform romantic moves on the lower stage. "Anticipating" The theme is this song is having fun and going out with friends. There is a video introduction where Britney calls her friends and asks them if they wanna go out. They all meet on the stage which now contains colorful houses and a car. They all hop into Britney's car after dancing together, and Britney drives them to the second stage. Here, Britney points out the words to the song are on the giant screen and Britney asks the audience to sing along. ] "I'm A Slave 4 U" Britney reveals a sexy green outfit and starts performing this song. The theme is the jungle, complete with nets and ladders. The choreography is intense. After the song, Britney takes a bow with her band and dancers and leads you to believe the show is over. "Baby One More Time" - The Encore After a few minutes, a giant waterfall drops onto the stage. Britney comes out from under the stage and goes right under the water. She starts singing a slower, remixed version of "Baby One More Time" as she walks from the first to the second stage. After the first verse, the song changes into an up tempo, remixed version. Britney joins her dancers on the rising platform and rises through the waterfall. After the song, fireworks explode, and Britney attaches to the chord and lowers herself again from 20 feet in the air onto the stage. She goes through the waterfall, and exits the stage. Overall, Britney's show lasted about 90 minutes, and every last one was outstanding. If you have any liking for Britney at all, and she stops in your city on the next tour, don't miss it. She puts on a great show. |
