We took a trip through AAA to the Moon Palace in Cancun. Everything went very well. I was particularly impressed that at the Airport, the AAA people spotted the paperwork we were holding, came to us and took us back to their table. We had no idea where we were going. We were quickly loaded onto a van and taken to the hotel.
The room was nice and had a small view of the ocean. My wife liked the jacuzzi in our room. I liked the liquor dispensers. The "included" day-trips were a lot of fun though I got tired of hearing the tour guides beg for tips since this was sold as an ALL-INCLUSIVE resort. And, I didn't like the hospitality people at the hotel trying to push us into the pricey trips by telling us that the included trips we not any fun. But, nothing was forced on to us, and we stuck with the included trips to Tulum, Chichen Itza and Xpu Ha (pronounced Hoosh Pooha). Note about Xpu Ha, there are NO lockers so don't take any valuables. At the place you keep your clothing while snorkeling, there is NO security other than two or three teenagers busily handing out equipment. The hotel guy lied about lockers, so when we got back to the hotel, I walked up to him and said, "You're a liar. There are no lockers at Xpu Ha. You lied." He said, "There are lockers." I said "There are no lockers. You're a liar and a dumba$$." I then walked away because I really wanted to punch him. It's hard to enjoy snorkelling when you think your wallet is getting emptied.
Nothing was stolen, but I think I was just lucky. I was especially mad because I had specifically asked about lockers, and he assured us that they existed. He also tried to talk to my wife as though she were some kind of shop-aholic Stepford wife. That was REALLY annoying. "Oh maam, I know YOU will want to take advantage of the shopping tour if you husband can part with his Visa card." Argh! I got the idea that Mexico isn't the most open-minded place with regard to equality. O.k., that guy annoyed me, but the other people at the hotel were pretty nice.
As for AAA, they were fantastic. I was considering booking a June trip to Las Vegas on Expedia, Priceline or Hotwire, but I'm not going to take any chances. A friend and I are celebrating his graduation from medical school, and he want to have a big time since he has not had a real vacation in two years. I think AAA might be a little more expensive, but they have never let me down. I'd rather pay more for a more sure thing. After reading the reviews of the other travel websites, it's seems like it's a 50-50 deal on actually getting what you paid for. I used AAA for trips to California, Las Vegas, and Mexico, and I haven't been let down yet.
