you are unreserved in your passion for the movies you love
Why be reserved about one's love for movies? For people, maybe, but never for movies. ;)
Thanks, Jude...

The fact that you are unreserved in your passion for the movies you love. Sort of nice to see them through your eyes. (great choices) Thanks...Jude

Crip,
Thanks for the comments. They are all valid, but, as you say, "that's just [your] opinion". Not to demean your opinion, or anything, but it's obviously wrong. ;)

re: Butch and Sandance as "a movie about nothing -- with no substance whatsoever -- and ... a tremendous box office hit ... packed ... with pretty faces and witless banter.
I hate to speak ill of the dead (and esp. of Ms. Kael, whose writings I've long admired) but Ppppbbbllllttt!!!
True, the romantic montage grinds the movie to a halt, and the bicycle scene could have been scored by something less syrupy. But other than that, Butch entertains me, it says much about the progress of the Old West, and despite the fact that they're pretty, Newman and Redford shine. And their are not the least bit witless. Er, rather, they are witty.

Jack, you criticize Heathers for copping out in the final third, when the film ends with the antagonist dead and the school exploded? (Am I remembering this correctly?) Tough man to please, you are.
And hey, another Quick and the Dead admirer. I thought I was the only one. Gosh that film is loaded with style and story and pathos and drama and... well, let's just say it's loaded.
Thanks for commenting, as always...

The Abyss? (Reply to this comment)
by cripper
That would have never made my top 100 list (but that's just my opinion)! Ah well, I would've put Lawrence of Arabia much higher on my top 100 list, because I don't think there'll ever be an epic film as great as that one. I'm glad you put Love and Death on the list, because I think that's one of Allen's best films.
Look forward to the rest of your list.

"What about the other 60?"
Definitely some agreements on the others; that's just the one that I agreed with enough to comment on, at a moment when I actually felt like commenting. (Sometimes I'm just not so communicative. Kind of silly in a writer, but there you go. :) I've certainly been following your series with interest!

Interesting choices (Reply to this comment)
by Mr.Eyore
even daring, some of them.
Pauline Kael said of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (before people were saying the same thing about Jaws, then Star Wars) that it utterly ruined American cinema in that it showed that you could make a movie about nothing -- with no substance whatsoever -- and it could be a tremendous box office hit so long as you packed it with pretty faces and witless banter.
At least I think that's what she said. Personally, I give the movie a thumbs down because it's got one of those romantic montages and the song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head." Ick.

Becky, I'm not jealous. For you see, I'm not really in Toronto. No, I actually have a dedicated cable modem here in my Hawaiian beach hut. The tiki torches light my way to the beach, where I go for after-review-writing dips to refresh myself. That whole hoser-Canadian thing was just a cover. A way to gain sympathy from the gullible masses.
(I wish... my hands are numb as I type this)
Glad your trip is going well... met any celebs yet (besides your own bad self, I mean?)

Re: Abyss better in director's cut (Reply to this comment)
by mfunk75
I remember getting out of the theatre and thinking "OK, so the aliens were there so we could have this movie."
Normally I would agree with you. But in this case I don't need an explanation for the aliens' existence. They're there, and the story is jumpstarted, and that's enough for me.
The "making of" movies on The Fellowship of the Ring were also incredible, but took many days of viewing to get through.
I got lucky, and bought the 4-disc Fellowship set the day before I came down with the flu. So I had a full day to eat my soup, drink my OJ, and wade through the endless documentaries on that fine set.
Thanks for the comments...

I'm glad somebody finally had the sense to get "A Fish Called Wanda" on a top hundred list. Where else can you see an old lady's dogs get crushed and run over? And what night wouldn't be complete without the Marx Brothers wrecking havoc, this time at the opera? I hope Groucho likes hard-boiled eggs.

You think that I am in LA (I'm not really trying to break into the business-- that was just a joke.) but I'm actually in Toronto stalking you. Thanks for the clue as to where you live. ;) But, seriously, I watched A Fish Called Wanda when I was doped up on codeine after getting my wisdom teeth out, which reminds me of another reason I need to go to Canada: 222! My mom's crazy friend stole all of mine that I brought back from Montreal.
There are palm trees outside this DSL-ed flat where I am crashing. Apparently, it's near where O.J. Simpson lived. It's gonna be tough to go back to the arctic tundra of Massachusetts. I'm off to Malibu when these people come back from getting coffee. OK, done making you jealous now. :)

Abyss better in director's cut (Reply to this comment)
by msmarques
The aliens are better explained in the director's cut of the Abyss. I remember getting out of the theatre and thinking "OK, so the aliens were there so we could have this movie." And it seemed a bit circular. But in the director's cut, there is a much better explanation.
Also, the "making of" movie is pretty incredible.
The "making of" movies on The Fellowship of the Ring were also incredible, but took many days of viewing to get through.

It seems the ordering of your list is a wee bit vexing to poor Dan ... I think you're torturing him on purpose, you cinema brute!
Don't tell Dan, but I've purposefully published the list backwards, just to get a rise out of our little cinephile friend. I think it's working. ;)

Re: Periodic ongoing incredulity... (Reply to this comment)

Part 3 in an Ongoing Series of Mike Replying to Dan's Incredulous Comments:
That's like putting a bottle of Pink Grapefruit Thunderbird over a fine red wine. Or like putting a 40 oz. of Colt over a pint of Guinness.
Dan, had a hard night of drinking, did we? Never have I been bombarded with such a flurry of liquor similies... none of which are correct!
Next thing you'll be saying mean things about Bob Clark!
Bob Clark is a big pussy, whose only real masterpiece you refuse to see.
You know what? The best part of writing these lists is the moment, after publication, when you guess which films are to come. I'm just sad that we'll only get to play this game one more time. So let's make it count, okay?
One of these days I'll write my Best of the 1980s.
I think I've said this before, but it's just as apt now: "Promises, promises."
Then maybe I'll do a list of the 100 best films not on any of my other lists. That would be, um, how you say, psychotic.
No. That would be, how you say, fun. "Top 100 Films I've Never Put On Any Other List Or Even Reviewed Before Or Even Seen!" How's that for a catchy title?
Always a pleasure, Dan...

And you wouldn't have it any other way... But putting Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels over The Seven Samurai? That's like putting a bottle of Pink Grapefruit Thunderbird over a fine red wine. Or like putting a 40 oz. of Colt over a pint of Guinness. Would you do those things?
And don't say mean things about David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan. Next thing you'll be saying mean things about Bob Clark!
Looking forward to the next list featuring The Fable of the Bush League Lover Who Failed To Quality and Live, Love and Believe (since I'm assuming by "Uncle Francis" you meant silent film legend Francis X. Bushman). You've unfortunately already included too many Coen Brothers movies for me to make jokes, because for all I know, you really respect The Hudsucker Proxy. And I'd guess The Story of Us and North are probably in the offing as well.
One of these days I'll write my Best of the 1980s. Then maybe I'll do a list of the 100 best films not on any of my other lists. That would be, um, how you say, psychotic.
