The Bottom Line maybe some of these five will land on your best of list . . .

time and time again the great pieces of hip hop are applauded and i do not deny their value to the community . . .

- Public Enemy | Nation of Millions
- NAS | Illmatic
- NWA | Straight Outta Compton
- A Tribe Called Quest | The Low End Theory
- Eric B. and Rakim | Paid In Full
- Gang Starr | Hard to Earn
- EPMD | Strictly Business
- Boogie Down Productions | By All Means Necessary
- X-Clan | To the East Blackwards
- Jungle Brothers | Done by the Forces of Nature

i wanted to highlight five bits that seem to get slept on: (chronological order)

Black Sheep - A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing (1991)

mr. long and dres met in rural north carolina, but found their fame in NYC after making connections with the native tongues family. "the choice is yours" was recently recreated for a nationwide Adidas television commercial.

The Goats - Tricks of the Shade (1992)

the goats predated fellow philly artists "the roots" with their use of live backing. they took the hip hop skit format, mixed in a dash of funk and rock, and produced an intelligent and political story.

excerpt from "typical american"

Military is a mockery for all to see
Be all you be is just another trick that's up their sleeves
But ya better believe that you'll be grieving when ya ain't receiving
What was promised don't be astonished cause ya won't be leaven
They reeled ya in like your skin had fins
Now you're poundin' sand for another man's sins
To each his own to each his own they say
But I'm gonna blow a bone and you can march 'til the cows come home
You likes alone and me direct your own ???
But when you come home in a box
Green draws, green pants, green socks
Typical American kid, I think not

Basehead - Play with Toys (1992)

folk-styled hip hop beats with politically inspired messages created by michael ivey on a 4-track at home. check it.

Polyrhythm Addicts - Rhyme Related (1999)

if only there was more of this to be had. only 10 cuts. straight up pure old school aesthetics produced by dj spinna (DJ Spinna's a winner, he's no beginner). Shabaam
Sahdeeq, Apani B Fly Emcee, and Mr Complex have a unique chemistry spinning clever and fun lyrics while never taking themselves too seriously.

Ugly Duckling - Journey to Anywhere (2000)

probably, the closest thing to native tongues to ever come out of the west coast. these three white boys might not attain the success realized by the beastie boys but they are able to use their comic appeal to take some intelligent shots at hip hop and society in general.

excerpt from "just a little samba"

You might spot me in Versace suits
When I'm at award shows paparazzi shoot
I own a fly home, four-car garage
With rides for me and my entourage
Hold up, I got a email
It's a female
Girls pressing on me like Lee Nail
