A Simple Request

Jan 01 '03

The Bottom Line A good section, when you just have to chat.

What a truly blessed Christmas 2002 was for me. Myself, my son, his wife, and my granddaughter got to spend Christmas Eve with my baby brother and his family. Oh he is also the baby brother of Gung (smile) but Gung had other family obligations to attend to in VA his children were with him, one coming all the way from Washington State. So he was forgiven. But I just leaned Gung will be visiting us all this weekend and I'm very excited.

Gung and Mrs. G. will be seeing their niece for the first time, who was born on the first anniversary of our Mom's death and will be one year old next week. This baby brother of ours has just returned from Afghanistan, where he has been since last Christmas. With the top notch rumor that he will soon be deployed again. A family get together is indeed called for. Once again he will pack his bag, leaving his wife, and two small children.

We attended midnight mass together where he dressed in his full military gear. Before anyone had a chance to say anything, he said "I am wearing this in honor and remembrance of all the military personnel who have lost their lives. For the ones that are still over there away from their family, living in dreadful conditions, fighting to protect us so we can go and worship free."

I don't recall being more proud of him. Along with that pride comes a certain amount of fear. I question if what we are embarking upon is correct, the right thing to do? He like an apostle of Christ goes forth in faith, without question or doubt. He goes with great personal sacrifices, for a Country he believes in, a freedom he is willing to fight for. I remember some of these same feelings, as Gung like his younger brother answered the call without question. Sacrificed a "normal" family life style, for the sake of freedom. Our freedom, each of us.

The Lord has blessed me with some of the bravest, kindest, loving and giving brothers, I just want to keep them. Yes, I'm afraid and I look forward to Gung my rock telling me everything will be okay. My friends a new year is upon us, but things don't seem to be changing. Our loved ones are still being uprooted and put into a strange country to fight and die at the hands of those that faith holds little or no meaning. I am not judging their beliefs, I am not condemning their hate, nor condoning it. I am simply asking that you remember those service members that are shedding their blood to keep yours pumping.

Considering all they are giving, I feel my request is very small. Please remember them in your prayers. I am not asking anyone to go against what they believe or feel. I only ask they be remembered. Yes, I'm scared not for myself, but for the lives of so many that will be forever changed. To be honest I'm scared for me too. Thank you for letting me rant, fear makes me chatty. No ratings on this piece needed, just a little prayer.

Hurry Up Gung!!!
