Re: Re: How about these? (Reply to this comment)
by soulonice007
before i start i should tell you i respect your opinion on all of your reviews that i have read
personally i disagree with saying all of his tracks have been avg to above avg but thats nothing more than an opinion..
the thing with "i phantom" is u cant listen to the tracks individually... u have to listen to the whole thing as it is a chronological story (as im sure youve heard)
also its important to note he has improved dramatically in my opinion from his last 2 albums
in regard to the production... el-p doesnt produce several tracks which is good since his style didnt fit mr lif's well on their last album ... also el-p is a little less quirky than usual with the beats so they end up complimenting mr lif more than one would expect
bottom line: i know several ppl who didnt think much of this album after hearing individual tracks but when i told them to listen to the whole album they were feelin it much more... mr lif just probably doesnt do it for u (i kinda feel this way about esoteric) but i suggest u try and listen to this album as a whole
sorry for the late response (only ~8 months hah)
peace

This review is much more in line with the way that I feel about EL-Ps solo effort.

While I agree that Mr. Lif and EL-P are not for everyone, I think that they both introduce fresh ideas to the game.
Cee-Lo was just having some fun (perhaps too much for some).
cheers!

Because:
- I pretty much agree with MagnumForce's assesment of Fantasic Damage: http://www.epinions.com/content_63193910916
- Cee-Lo's was a HUGE dissapointment, plus he sang for most of it.
- I've never understood why the hell peeps keep fawning over Mr. Lif. Every track I've heard from his has been average to barely above average, so I passed on buying I Phantom.
- Haven't heard The Living Souls yet.

Man Scarface as 25! I've been bangin that album since it droped! and what about Lil Flip? I think he is definitly in contention for major label rookie of the year. And last, not and top 25 finisher, but a honorable mention, ups to Devin The Dude! His album was just fun to listen to.

Great piece. Most I agree with but I can't figure out why you left out the following:
- Fantastic Damage by EL-P
- Cee-lo and His Perfect Imperfections
and perhaps
- I Phantom by Mr. Lif
- The Living Soul by 3582 (J. Rawls and Fat Jon)

Re: Paul Barnum?! (Reply to this comment)

LOL. Yeah I originally bought MC Paul B's album so I could tear it apart, but it was better than I expected. His flow is strange, but I liked it.
And yeah that Sunz REALLY disappointed me. I was hoping for much more.

Paul Barnum?! (Reply to this comment)
by churst
Okay, you know that I'm going to have to slap together a slightly dissenting list of my own now. And I'll do so primarily because my brain is telling me that my eyes have gone insane after they told my brain that you included MC Paul Barnum on this list, when in fact he would only belong on the list if you had titled it "Top 25 Worst Albums Of This Year" and then listed it as #1. :)
Tragically I haven't listened to much new music this year, so I'll probably have to just list my 25 favorite albums of all genres instead of restricting it to hip-hop only.
BTW, Eminem's latest was definitely disappointing. Maybe not quite as much as the new ones by The Sunz Of Man or The Jungle Brothers, but close. I guess I still like some of it, but it has me yawning for the most part.

Yeah, The Fix was actually just outside of my Top 25. Now that I'm going to remove J-Zone, I can add Scarface on the back end. I'll be editing today I think.

Yeah, a LOT of people liked the Eminem show more than I. It just didn't do all that much for me, and I'm tired of hearing him whine about his mother.

I feel what you're saying. I'm a huge Com fan and I'll probably be selling EC back soon. Still, a lot of artistic effort went into that album, and it's hard for me to ignore that even if the result wasn't what I was hoping for.

:) Yeah, I was surprised I liked the Linkin Park track too. Shinoda (I think) may not be the best rapper, but the song has a catchy vibe.

LOL... Thanks. I haven't heard DJ Quik's album, but I'm not really all that impressed by his previous work. If you say it's good, I'll check it out though. As for X, I've heard most of those and I dunno... I'm just not feeling it. Your top of 2002 list is tight though too.

Re: J-Zone came out last year. (Reply to this comment)
by madtheory
THis was actually just a mistake on my part. The album dropped in 2001, but was re-released in 2002. Most of the major music sites have the re-release date and not the original. I buy so much music each year I honestly couldn't remember when this dropped. The list will be adjusted.

My list is almost complete.I Will give you a sneak peack right here.Peace

The fact that you have heard this much new music in a year from one genre is amazing to me! I can't believe it, but I had no idea Public Enemy put out a new album in 2002! Will definitely have to check that out. Your choice for #1 sounds interesting. I think I liked Eminem Show a little more than you. We drove about 3000 miles on vacation last summer and listened to that CD a lot. It definitely impressed me though it does grow weak toward the end...

but 'Electric Circus' was toxic. There's a line between listenable experimantation and abnormal music, and Common crossed it. Still, tight choices.

Matt, who keeps on saying year after year he'll drill down through the "hos and b*tches" c*ap and actually check out some intelligent rap.

very impressive list, yes, apart from a couple of glaring omissions. How you missed off DJ Quik and Under Tha Influence is amazing, and Xzibit's Man Vs Machine is at least worth a top 20 place (especially instead of Eminem's effort). But hell, different horses for different courses... generally spot on choices.
