| thcakid's Full Review: Sony SAT-HD100 Multi-Satellite Tuner |
I have owned the RCA DTC-100 for over a year and am generally pleased with it. For over 6 months now I have been looking forward to upgrading to the "new" Sony model that had about 20 different release dates. I finally got tired of waiting and decided to wait to I actually saw them on the shelf. Well, there here now and I think I know why there weren't any backorders. It's a lousy product.
The only thing going for it is the size and picture quality, but that comes at a steep price. As soon as you plug the unit in it starts to humm in the traditional 21st century Sony way. My Sony Vaio humms, my Sony DV-Deck humms, but at least when I turn them off the humming will stop. Not with the Sony sathd-100. So forget about having it near your sitting area where you might want to entertain and have a nice conversation with some friends.
Another thing is the VGA picture is off to the right. Component and S-Video picutre are dead center though.
Thirdly is the wait to from when you change a channel to when the channel is changed. The RCA does this too but that's an RCA. Sony is (or was) known for it's smooth interface. It must be something to do with Digital, becasue my father has an early model Sony DirecTV receiver and it changes channels fast. And on top of that you can preview all tha channels your changing too instantly.
In my opinion Sony has set back HDTV a year or two by putting into the marketplace a high end piece of garbage. Taking a giant step backwards, they will be putting first time users off by the complexity of this receiver. Hopefully next time they'll wait even longer to market a product but do so only when it is "absolutely" ready to wear the Sony logo.
Lastly, I paid $200 less then the $800 it retails for. I can only imagine how mad I would have been had I paid full price.
p.s. (When I wrote the above opinion several months ago I thought I would have to go with sub-par performance for another year or so. Not Anymore! The new Zenith HD receiver is the BOMB (that's a good thing). Awesome interface, picture quality, ease of use, tweaking capabilities, I just love it. The only thing is that the remote is a little big. If it were like the Mitsubishi (400 or 500 HD) then it would definitely put all the other brands out of business. I do recommend the Zenith!)
