The Bottom Line ---

[ verse 1 ]
Deanna Joy was at the head of the class
Straight A student, had a heart of glass
Her brother came home to find her lying in her bed
One single shot, a single bullet in her head.

Musically gifted, smarter than most
She had everything to live for, friends and family were close
Why did she give it up without giving it a chance
Only one more year ‘til “Pomp and Circumstance”.

[ chorus ]
When you look at me what do you see
Things aren’t always what they seem to be
The game is rough and you play to win
Can’t be too sure what’s behind that grin.

[ verse 2 ]
She could plan out her future and everything in it
With the gifts she was given, the sky was the limit
But something was wrong, just wasn’t quite right
And everyone knew it after that night.

The letter in her hand told the whole story
He had warned her not to tell or she’d be sorry
They’d known him for so long, who knew what was in store
From the friend, the neighbor, the man next door.

[ chorus ]
When you look at me what do you see
Things aren’t always what they seem to be
The game is rough and you play to win.
Can’t be too sure what’s behind that grin.

[ verse 3 ]
How long had this been happening, nobody knew
She seemed just fine, there wasn’t a clue
Until the whole sordid story was told in the morning paper
No one knew she was being raped by the next door neighbor.

Her parents were numb, their only daughter was dead
One single shot, a single bullet in her head
The neighbor man arrested, spends his life in jail
All that’s left of Deanna’s life is this sad, sad tale.

[ chorus ]
When you look at me what do you see?
Things aren’t always what they seem to be.
The game is rough and you play to win.
Can’t be too sure what’s behind that grin.
