Regime Change Begins at Home (Reply to this comment)
by laryan
There is a fourth reason which most Americans are not aware of: regime change. The Progress for a New American Century (PNAC) who just happen to be Bush supporters or cabinet members, said back in 1998 that it was important to invade Iraq as a stepping stone to further regime changes in the Middle East. In other words, anyone who thinks this is going to stop with Iraq is being foolish.
Why is regime change so important? Because it protects US interests. Rather like Hitler was protecting the interests of Germany.
World domination is never pretty, no matter who is doing it. And it's always wrong.

Economics? (Reply to this comment)
by 4-1-1
Since when is it the government's job to see that people get fed? I don't think raising taxes and increasing social welfare programs are going to make this a better country. I think the opposite is true. Interesting rant, nonetheless.

Bush has always disgusted and terrified me. Now he wants people to buy SUVs like candy. I can't even think of what to say I'm so mad. Wish we could impeach him NOW.

Are you the same Mike Holmes from "Lower Alabama"?
If so, I know you from the 80's.
If not, then I'm sorry for making the connection.

I Usually Do Not Talk Politics - (Reply to this comment)
by Granniemose
on Epinions, but after reading your article, and Chad's Friday night rumblings, I find myself hooked and unable to keep my mouth shut. I have a theory that my daughter says is paranoia, but I believe it to be true.
Everyone is blaming young Bush. I think George W is a junior balloon, blown up by his Daddy and his cronies.
Let's take a look at George the First. First, he headed the CIA until shortly before Kennedy was assassinated. Second he was vice President for eight years, and President for four. His father, Prescott, was a wealthy Senator. Most of George the First money was made by oil, and the control of natural gas. Do you realize the power and inside knowledge that man has behind him just as the former head of the CIA alone?
I think George I desperately wanted to go down in
history as one of the "great" presidents. He instigated the Desert Storm fiasco thinking that would do it. It didn't. So how can he do it?
First he purchased the governor positions for two sons - Texas and Florida - two very, very important states. He has the power and the money to do it. My paranoia makes me think that there was some political shenanigas going on for those two. The Florida election for President was very obviously prepared for in advance. Who was the head of the election committee and managed to get the double ballots in place, the unworking voting machines, and all the other shenanigans? It was brother Jeb. Jeb didn't resign until Gore challenged the vote count. By that time, the set up was in place.
Then young Bush was put in office, although he was not elected by the popular vote. Now how is George going to get the BUSH name written as one of the great names in American history? He can't do it with the economy - because all of his cuts and economy programs favor the very wealthy. He feels that the middle class or the poor should pay for elite. In Australia, they have lessened their need for dinasour fuel in half by adding additives to gasoline that work as well. We can't do that here. Why?
Well, anyway, the alternative, of course, is WAR.
Clinton was called a draft dodger because he took a deferment when given the opportunity to become a Rhodes scholar. None of the Bush boys - who were the right age, went to war in Vietnaam. Why?
If we get embroiled in a war in the middle east all by ourselves, and win, who is going to come out smelling like a rose - and a positive President? George Junior, that's who.
I believe that Bush the First thinks that those of us who are far beneath him in finances are stupid. But even if we are not, George I has the finances and inside dope enough to even muzzle most of the media...and to issue a constant barrage of accolades on George junior calculated to sway the masses. With his money and information power, he can do anything he darn well wants to, and does.
George W, who wears a cowboy hat, and owns a ranch: who was born and raised in Maine and is even trying to talk like a Texan, is nothing but a mini me for Daddy. If left to his own devices without his speech writers near him, he makes blunder after blunder.
So call me far fetched, and silly and senile, but that's the way it looks to me.

A point (Reply to this comment)
by st_patrick
I agree with much of what you said. However, I question what you meant when you said the U.S. only came to Kuwait's rescue because its oil supplies were in danger. Saddam Hussein hadn't just invaded Kuwait, he also invaded Iran and threatened Israel and Saudi Arabia. Saddam Hussein has never made any secret of his hopes to dominate the middle east. And what do you mean by 'only oil?' By controlling oil supplies, Saddam could easily have presented a danger to the west.
However, I agree that Bush is an idiot who is trying to divert attention from problems at home. Who give Bush the right to bully the world? And I think it's disgusting that he's trying to tie Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein together. Saddam Hussein is not interested in militant Islam, only in himself. Saudi Arabia is more likely to be guilty in that respect, as they are overflowing with Islamic militants. But then they provide oil to the U.S. don't they? Can't insult the Saudis.
See my own political write up.

My main concern (Reply to this comment)
by oldcomixfan
with N.Korea is that I hope they know what they are doing and don't do a reenactment of Chernobyl. So what is the prez going to do?Bomb a nuke plant?
I think the primary worry about Iraq and some of these other countries is the manufacturing and detonation of dirty cobalt bombs in the atmosphere. They wholeheartedly believe they are going to heaven anyway, where 72 sloe-eyed virgins will tend to their every whim.So kill em all and let Allah sort em out. It's in the Qu`ran.
The WTC is proof that there are people out there who hate us.Maybe it is the feds fault for meddling in other countries backyards.Or maybe the square root is a deep-seated envy of our business savvy and productivity.
What was the logic in killing innocent business workers in order to retaliate against American politicians?Only the Pentagon got hit{and are they not too the minions of the politicians?}
I personally suspect it is all one big chess game.Who was in charge of the see eye eh when Osami was our buddy fighting those pesky Russkies?Hmmmmmm

I disagree . . . but . . . (Reply to this comment)
by khahn86351
I rated this very helpful. Why? Because everyone has a right to their own thoughts and opinions, especially when it comes to politics.
what gives us the right to say which countries can and cannot have "weapons of mass destruction"?
This is about the only point you made that I agree with 100%.
But I also believe Bush walked into a mess beyond his control . . . but that is just my opinion.

Bush Tactics (Reply to this comment)
by skbreese
Mike,
I totally agree with your assessment. I am really tired of Bush and his Presidency of Paranoia and his robbing the U.S. of our natural resources, while piling up huge deficits. The sooner he's out of office the better, in my opinion. What I can't understand is his consistently high approval ratings. Great job on the essay. Sheila.

Well, done. I feel the exact same way you do, but could never put it into words so expressively. We are a self appointed police department because many people as well as the leaders of this country think we are better than anyone else.
We may have more resources (of all kinds) available to us as a nation at whole. We may be more educated then many, have more power than many. We also have as you pointed out much poverty and suffering among our people that the government could give a ratsass about.
So someone was trying to kill his daddy, now that gives him the right to kill our daddies, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters.
He should be held responsible for the blood of our service people that seeps into that foreign ground.
I agree a duel at high noon on Pennsylvania Ave. It would be a sell out crowd. I would be interested in knowing how many Senators, Governors, and Congress members children will be joining my brother over there? Care to wager a bet?
Fantastic editorial and you as well as every American has the right to be MAD AS HELL. Thanks for saying it.

Actually,... (Reply to this comment)

he wouldn't have to challenge Saddam to a duel. Saddam's already challenged him. All our chickenhawk glorious leader would have to do is *accept* the challenge. But Schrubbie's never met a challenge - moral, intellectual or otherwise - that was too big to run away from. He dismissed the idea as "irresponsible." In Schrubland it's always far more responsible to send tens of thousands of young Americans whose parents lack powerful political connections and lots of moola to do the *actual* fighting, and, needless to say, dying.
