I love the convenience of renting DVD's over the net. Netflix has a much better selection than my local blockbuster and I can search the database by genre, actor, director, etc in order to hone my viewing by taste. The DVDs come with a prepaid shipping envelope, so I just drop in the mail when I'm through and, best of all, I never have to worry about late fees again.
I pay $49.98 a month for the convenience of having 8 DVDs selected at a time. That means I may have some at home, some on the way back, and some new ones on the way to me. This is usually plenty, unless I go on a real weekend movie watching spree. When Netflix gets one of my watched movies back they promptly send the next one on my rental queue that is available. I no longer pay for cable, so I am saving money and get to watch the movies that I want to when I want to. By keeping the DVD's moving (mailing back to them immediately) I have watched as many as 20 films in one month, keeping the average price per movie to a very reasonable rate.
I have also become a bit more adventurous in my selections than when I was limited to wandering around the video store reading boxes. The organized database, huge selection, and viewer comments and Netflix recommendation (based on my own ratings of movies I have seen) make it easy and fun to develop a list of movies I want to watch.
Also, now that I have a DVD player, I much prefer DVD's to video because of their superior quality and special features. and my local video store has a really small choice of DVD's.
The only drawback I have encountered with Netflix is long waits for very popular films and new releases. If you have to see a new movie the instant it is released on DVD, you may still want to make a trip to the video store.
