a general reply (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
I'm just posting this to note that, while in my first week as an Epinionator i was too underconfident to reply to comments like the ones below, anyone reading this for the first time should please feel welcome to post a comment, and i _will_ reply. I always like receiving nice (even if argumentative) feedback. Cheers!

On cops and whistlers (Reply to this comment)

That i like the phrase "dark Scottish loch" almost as much as i like improvising variants of "every yard you rake/ every game of Quake/ every scalp you flake/ every dead you wake".
In a list full of quirky little moments, this was my favouritest. "Every cake you bake / every salt you shake / every garden snake / Every body by Jake". Hmm, that was fun.
Vox, you better be careful. Another one of these revealing reviews, and some people here at the site might get a handle on who you really are. ;)

Great list... (Reply to this comment)

I'm always a bit turned off by any list including the Beatles, but you managed to choose the one album from them that I can stomach.
Nice job!

It takes a heck of a writer for me to get through a list when in fact I really dislike most of the records on it.

Hey,
This is a really great piece of writing. You've got a real knack for melding personal and critical responses (enlivened, no doubt, by the realisation that the two ain't really separable) - and, of course, it helps that I dig your selections here. Anyone who can defend their liking of both 10,000 Maniacs and the Pistols, without once seeming even slightly defensive or false, is good in my books. And I don't even know you ;) ... But then again, musical taste can, as you suggest, be an accurate barometer of personality, at least to some extent.

Tori, etc. (Reply to this comment)

I'm partial to ... Pele, which I think is her most challenging and ultimately most rewarding album, but it's hard to argue with Little Earthquakes, especially with the case you've built for it here.
And that's possibly the best defense of 10,000 Maniacs that I've ever read. And this essay is possibly the best piece of music-related writing I've read on this site in a months.
Thanks for the comment on my Dixie Chicks review, by the way, and welcome to my WOT.

Quite a telling review; i don't know how many pretty-boy singers out there like sharing about the good times a-singing away with yer ma, but i'll betcha it's prett'inear all of 'em.
Naw, really you're reasoning here offers little variance to that of my own, and you cover a nice breadth of flavors. Illustrating the connections that one can have with music and how it can buttress individual personalities is something that typical "fans" don't patronize sufficiently.
Good form.
