Writing at Epinions can be fun. Please don't let your first low ratings get you down.

Welcome :) Like anywhere on the Internet, you will find some bad apples, but in general, Epinions has been a rather friendly place to hang out over the years.

Like a Big Hug (Reply to this comment)

Thank you for your words of welcome and encouragement. After becoming bogged down in the guidelines, warnings, stories of revenge ratings and competition, I was beginning to wonder about the "community" aspect of this site. Your letter helps refocus on the things that made this site so originally popular.

I am new to this reviewing business and your messages was one of encouragement and empowerment. I feel you always get the best results from people when you encourage with positive words and comments. Your message made me feel welcome and unafraid to do reviews without being put down. Thank you.

Excellent advice...

And my how you've got all grown up here at Epinions. You've done well for yourself here, and I'm proud of you.

Not surprised, but proud.

Appreciation for your help!! (Reply to this comment)
by catmull112883
Thank you for your help, i am sure that the first few reviews that i write will not be " Top Dollar"!! Even though i am going to try and be one of the first to do so... :) I am going to try and do a review of a local pizza place here in my home town named, Fat Jacks Pizza. I would be honored if you would review my thoughts, and give me the advise i need to be the best, well at least to bump up the copper that i might make to some silver! Your priceless advise i believe will make a difference in my writing!

please help me understand (Reply to this comment)

I am a little confused... I tried to write a review of an online vendor, and my comment was rated "do not show" by you. I have rewritten the comment with more detail, but there seems to be no recourse --

Could you please help me navigate Epinions, so that I can share with others the persistence of the problem with this vendor -- i eventually found a similar occurrence documented from 3 years ago, but not until I had fallen in the same trap. Since there are few recent reviews of this vendor, I think it is worthwhile publishing their continued bad shipping practices.

I appreciate what you said in your welcome letter about people who are hypercritical of others to inflate their self-importance (I'm paraphrasing -- I'm typing in the little box and can't see your letter to be precise).

I rated it a somewhat not because of any fault in your letter, but because I enjoy writing and have never feared editors. So I have no plans to turn and run. Of course, I say that not having written my first review yet.

Actually, I think you and I are going to do well for one another. Your writing style is similar to my own.

I actually wandered into your category to submit an SAP so I'm off to find the link for that (I've only been here 15 minutes and already I'd like to change something about the site... it would be awesome to have a left-column navigation bar for reviewers/members...)

Thanks again for the welcome,

Colleen Kayter

Apparently, from what I’ve read epinions policy doesn’t hold a lot of water. As far as what’s fair, that seems to me to be in the eye of the epinionator in this website.

Thanks for the info on cashing out.

That's OK then, provided it were Epinions policy. It still wouldn't be fair for individual members to rate using that policy, if it were not encouraged.

As for "cashing out" -- by the second week in June you should see a positive number under "Earnings Summary" on your profile. When that reaches $10, you can request a check from Epinions. That's what I mean by cashing out.

I'm saying that if a newbie doesn't make a VH on the first shot that they should just be given comments to improve. I'm not saying that their non-VH review should be shown. Of course I don't think it should be shown no non-members. Then, if they don't follow the comments then give whatever rating is deserved. It makes more sense to me to give a new person a chance in this epinion world. I think there would be less people dropping out and even less revenge rating. I just read your profile page. Maybe less email bombing too!

As for members cashing out - Sorry, I haven't any idea of what you're talking about on that issue.

What you suggest (not rating the first reviews of new members in new topics anything other than Very Helpful) might be Helpful to the new members, but not Helpful to the users (people who use the reviews as guidance). If I were one of the employees of Epinions, I could not, in good conscience, recommend that, unless the first reviews were treated by the system as if they were unrated; i.e., not shown to non-members or to those members who choose not to read unrated reviews, and no possibility of earning money.

Amy is quite correct that you should not expect Epinions to be a major source of revenue, but some members who joined in 2004 have gotten the $10 minimum for cashing out. Would you deny that to members who join in 2005?

And while we're on the subject....... (Reply to this comment)
by craftswoman
Right on sis-tah!

One of the things I don't like about the rating system is that when a newbie posts a review, if its not within the guidelines that it's supposed to follow, the newbie gets clobbered by the Advisors with a negative rating. And it FEELS like a clobbering!

It seems most helpful (pun intended) to me if no rating was given for a first review but instead helpful comments were given. And to do this in EACH Category. Then after the newbie cleans up whatever needs to be done, update the review, THEN have it rated. I also think an advisor should leave a comment saying, please notify me when you update. I'm not sure if all the VIP's do this.

If the review happens to be VH with no modifications needed, then obviously do the VH thing and still leave comments if you want to.

If the VIP's (sorry I don't know what else to call them) really want new people to stick around that would make more sense to me.

I mean, we (newbies) don't even know who the heck you VIP's are! It's like, who in the world are these people and who do they think they are to rate my work?

There is a lot that is unclear. It's not that there isn't any information out there to help us. There's TOO much information. Where do you begin and when do you stop reading it all!

It just seems like newbies have to take their bumps and licks along the way which I feel is unfair, especially if someone wants to improve his/her writing skills because I think this is a great place for that.

Also, while I'm on the subject, are Advisors REQUIRED to give a rating on a poor review? I'd like to know what the rules are for Advisors if someone can help me out on that one. I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for listening,
Marcy

I'm glad to see you encouraging newbies to e-mail advisors/leads when a NH or SH is received w/ no comments- sometimes I am surprised that no one leaves comments on poorly rated reviews.

I have joined other websites with novel ideas in teh vein of epinions, and found them exceedingly esoteric and "xenophobic." But so far, epinions has not seemed that way, and I'm happy I joined.

Sensitive and Honest (Reply to this comment)
by rn_vargas
This is a great welcome to newbies like me. On my first book review, I just posted general thoughts, not knowing this was such a serious e-community. But, after being rated and visiting the opinions of my critics, I understood that this place wasn't some organized discussion forum. Thanks for this. It makes the assimilation so much easier. I won't try to resist since it's futile anyway. *LOL* Take care, R-

Happy Belated EpinAnniversary!!! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
You joined on what would have been my paternal grandma's 103rd birthday!!!

It doesn't seem that long ago when I was back in fourth grade telling her that she was now Phillips 66!!!

And not that long ago since June 6, 1973 when she went to be with Jesus after a brave battle with widespread cancer.

This June, I will have also been here for three years--yes, time does fly!!!

This is a wonderful and helpful welcome to newbies you've given!!!

I would have rated it Most Helpful if I could have, but I've not been given that option.

All I can think of is that the powers-that-be might be afraid that I would use it to vote every single one of 29th_Candidate pieces MH. LOLOLOLOL

Anyway, keep up the great work--and the great attitude!!!

Warm Fuzzies!

first drafts (Reply to this comment)
by rmthunter
Something that doesn't seem to get mentioned here, under the category of "nuts and bolts" -- don't just jump into the window and start writing unless you are a master of both writing and improvisation. I think it's a safe assumption that members have word processing -- use it: my reviews, which have gotten a very heartwarming response here, go through an average of 3-4 drafts before they ever get posted. The only one that has gotten less that VH was (you guessed it!) written on the fly, a one-draft wonder.

Now, there may be people out there whose minds are nice orderly places with all the facts and observations stored in neatly labeled bins ready to be retrieved at need. I envy them, if they exist. My mind is like a thrift store on Sunday afternoon. So I do drafts. I do many drafts (I have poems that are in their 20-somethingth draft and they're still not ready). This not only gives me a chance to organize my thoughts, it gives me time to remember everything I think is important and even the chance to think of something new about the book. Then I revise. And I revise again. Then I open the window and start typing.

My only reservation about your essay (which I think is excellent: cogent, instructive, clear, and mercifully brief) is that what's really going to help new writers is some idea of how to do it. I think you've got the what-to-do pretty well covered.

I didn't really mean to post my own essay here, and I've said what I have to say (for now), so I'll just say Thanks for some very helpful hints.

And then I'll shut up.

Only Advisors, Category Leads, and (I believe) Top Reviewers have access to the Most Helpful button. I don't agree with that Epinions policy, but that's the way it is.

I'm sorry but I don't know how to rate it "most helpful". I must be blind or something because I can't find that button anywhere...but if I could, that's what I would have rated it.
Anyway, thank you very much for writing that. I'm new, so it helped me a lot to read it. :)
