I purchased my first unit 3 years ago. The motor burned out when crushing ice. KitchenAid told me that when crushing ice, I need to use "pulse" mode first, even though the instruction manual makes no mention of this requirement. The replacement unit lasted less than one year because the plastic base that holds the glass container broke. KitchenAid customer service said that I need to wait five seconds after the unit stops before removing the container. Again, no mention of this in the manual. The replacement unit came and within six months, even though I waited five seconds after the motor stopped to removed the container, the plastic arms on the base that spin the blades once again wore down to the point that the blades stopped working. I returned the unit to the store and I have purchased a Waring Professional for about the same money. Since then, I have noticed that KitchenAid has redesigned the blender base spokes and so I do not know if the poor design has been corrected.
