Recently I completed a list of my top 250 artists and thinkers. A friend here at Epinions (mfunk75, if you want to know who to blame) jokingly asked where the next 250 are... Well, Mike, here it is. This one's for you, and for all others who enjoy lists with a passion. (Please?) http://www.epinions.com/content_3052445828 For those unacquainted with the rules of the game, and are not inclined to visit the Top 250, a brief recap: Below is the second half of a list of my 500 favorite artists and thinkers. I call it my pantheon. I've been working on this list for a few years now. I have included two numbers after each name (alphabetically organized, under fields). The FIRST NUMBER is the PLATEAU number, and tells you the height I feel these artists attain, with the number 5 being highest. The plateau rating is the average of what I imagine someone’s standing might be according to a broad consensus and the level I feel they belong in my estimation. For example, Mozart would be a 5 by broad consensus, a 4 in my own regard, and therefore gets a plateau rating of 4.5. The SECOND NUMBER tells you the degree of INFLUENCE each individual has had on me, again 5 being the greatest. Note: Many "influence" ratings here are disproportionately low. One reason may be that I simply do not know an individual's work well enough. Another reason is that we are dealing with the second half of a list of 500 favorites, and the numbers are bound to be a little low, compared with the first half. Also, the Influence Pre-16 refers to people whose influence on me was strongest in the first half of my life (making me... 32). In some cases, I have nearly renounced these people's works, as with Dali and Liszt, former strong influences who have dropped very low in my present estimation. Not that they will suffer from my change of heart!
