Peter-

I've never seen Arrested Development, but your lack of a closing parenthesis makes me worried that Curb Your Enthusiasm (officially my favorite show of all time) is to become history soon. Anyway, I'll check out your recommendation.

I kind of doubt it's the same Jen-- mine may like turtles, but that's not a defining characteristic!

Sorry for the tardy reply-- I missed the alert on this one.

I am wondering if your Jen is my present roommate? Does she like turtles?

Absolutely Fabulous JUST a two?

Dear gawd. I'm afraid I can't talk to you anymore. Absolutely Fabulous may be one of the most brilliant TV shows ever. I can't say that about Welcome Back Kotter, but I do think it deserves maybe a 3.4 or something.

Please, talk to me, talk to me!! I must have been on crank or something. I have no idea how a 2 got on that board... perhaps I wrote this before I saw more of the show. Yes, it is ambrosial, as far as TV goes.

Thanks, Kris, for whacking my brow over the oversight! I needed that.

Honestly, dahling, sweetie, you must watch the episode about the dolphin and re-think this low AbFab rating.

I can already tell that you're going to be a unique and fun person to read--and that I'll be coming away from everything I read here with my brain stretched a little more! Hmmmmmmm. . .wonder if my brain can stand it!

Cheers!

Re: Villa-Lobos (Reply to this comment)
by trust12345
I was surprised to see Villa-lobos on your list. Not really sure why, but I just didn't figure that he would be there...

Villa-lobos couldn't be called a major influence, but I have a sentimental attachment to him: one of my favorite choreographers (and co-collaborator) Ariane Anthony used his String Quartet No. 5 in one her best works. I could live without some of his works, indeed, without most of them... But there he is, occupying a small nook (or is it a cranny?) in my private pantheon.

I must say, I'm about as cultured as ummm....somebody who isn't cultured... But anyway, it seems that you are about as cultured as someone who is.

I love these tautological similes! Reminds me of a moment in Stardust Memories by Woody Allen where some blowhards are discussing high concept art flic by Woody's persona/director. One guy says, "What do think he meant by the Rolls Royce?" And the other: "I think it represented a car."

I would suggest checking out some Leo Brouwer as well.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check him out. Always happy to expand into unknown territory, so long as it's interesting territory.

I was surprised to see Villa-lobos on your list. Not really sure why, but I just didn't figure that he would be there...I think it's the guitarist-composer thing. Not many of them are very good so many musicians don't bother to find the good ones. If you are into South American guitar composers, I would suggest checking out some Leo Brouwer as well. I must say, I'm about as cultured as ummm....somebody who isn't cultured so the only names I really recognized were the composers and a few of the authors. And the TV shows of course! But anyway, it seems that you are about as cultured as someone who is. I am green with envy!

I wish I had cable! I'd watch the Daily Show, uh, daily as well. Lucky you.

I loved Vassar. Everything about it. Of course, at 10 years remove (I'm 32), one begins to romanticize a lot; but even during my days on campus, I was in love with the experience. I had wonderful professors in my double major fields(Philosophy and Engligh), many of whom are named on this list, after the mighty 500. I've known people not to like Vassar; apparently, minorities are not represented well enough there. Other people have had other complaints... but to me, it was the very lap of paradise. I've never gotten over my exit from Eden!

Recently, I had a work of mine (music composition) premiere at Wellsleyan. I liked the campus, though it was so eerily quiet at night. I couldn't find a soul, until it got very late; then suddenly, people were spilling out of everywhere. As a man, I liked Vassar's skewed ratio, for the same reasons.
Thanks for passing by,
John

I am very impressed with your list! I am addicted to The Daily Show, too. I would say it's the only show I watch, but, embarrassingly enough, I also watch "Joe Millionaire" and "American Idol." Oh, and Seinfeld re-runs.

Did you like Vassar? One of my good friends goes there, and he is currently miserable. :( But he's a senior, so I think he can tough it out for a few more weeks. I chose rival Wesleyan over Vassar for a largely superficial reason: better male/female ratio!!

Re: Jonas Mekas (Reply to this comment)

I only saw one Mekas film, but it was a DOOZY: weighing in at I think 6 hours. It's called, As I was Moving Ahead, Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses Of Beauty, or that's close enough. Mekas is founder and director of New York's cinephile's paradise, Anthology Film Archives. It was there I saw some works of Snow, but not the other fella you mentioned. Will keep my eyes out.

Thanks for stopping by,
John

Nope, and I talked with him today and he's actually a decade older, but has an early thirties' look. He's not into unicycles, but loves his mountain bike!

Well, my David Altman IS in his early 30s, but is from Columbus Ohio, and lives in NYC now. Probably not the same guy. Sorry!

My Fiona is 6. She's amazing.
Sorry about Frontline (and for that matter, Loveboat...). I've only seen it a couple times-- both excellent episodes-- not quite enough to register as an influence. Unfortunately, Love Boat played an important part of my childhood. See, my Dad was a bartender on a ship, and my brother was bald, and my family always had Charo and John Denver over for cocktails, along with other fabulous stars who would couple for the weekend and take their leave. Oh, and I had a pet gopher, named Gopher. So the Love Boat was like watching home movies, for me...

150 and growing... Great! I'd love to see it when he feels it's done (I don't recommend shooting for 500-- takes a while to get it right, and a heavy dose of obsessive searching. Sorry for the evil influence! Hope he finishes it soon... then I'll be able to bring up that loan I was asking about... Ah, family.

Second, John, you've given me a certain sense of power that I feel obligated now to abuse. So, please, in the next installment, include Nos. 501 - 1,000,000. Bwah-ha-ha!

You're on! Let me see,
#501...AAAA Pipe Suplliers
#502...AAA Auto Club, Main Office
#503...AAA Auto Club, Advertising
#504...AA Alcoholics Anonymous, Toll Free
#505...AA Alcoholics Anonymous, Crisis Hotline
#506...A B C Carpets
[...]
#45,833...Epinions, Complaints Department
#45,834...Epinions, Crisis Hotline
#45,835...Epinions, Customer Care

Oh, this list will knock your socks off!

I was pleasantly surprised to find both Ricky Jay and Terry Zwigoff on your list (amongst others). But I'm not sure Clarice Stone's work is worth mentioning (her husband with the silly name, however, I'm a big fan of).

You are a funny man, O, a naughty funny funny man.

First, I want to apologize to all for forcing you to read another trust12345 list. It's not fair that he should have a monumentally diverse range of influences (and a sickeningly accurate sense of recall) while we're all down here rolling around in the mud.
