| GasJocket214's Full Review: Mega Man Legends 2 for PlayStation 1 |
I am sure that there are a lot of Mega Man fans that are reading this. Some of you might be hoping to read a review that praises Mega Man. Saying how great he is, and how this game is so awesome, and how it provided hours upon hours of fun. Unfortunately to tell you the truth, I had never even heard of Mega Man until I played this game. Yes is true, I never was a die-hard fan of Mega Man and I probably never will be. I knew before I started playing this game that it was aimed towards a much younger audience. I didn’t care though, I saw this game for $8.99, and I thought why not. I mean even if I didn’t like the game I could wrap it up, and give it to one of my younger cousins for a birthday present. So either way I am still going to get a great deal, so I bought it. I must admit that I was somewhat interested in what this little blue guy had to offer, and I would soon find out.
So how about those nice little pixels that we call graphics.
I must admit that Capcom did a decent job with the graphics in this game. No they aren’t anything to sit and marvel at, but they are nice. (I mean come on, the game was made for 7 year olds, we are lucky that it is 3-Dimentional!) As for Mega Man, he is of course decked out in his blue suit, which is about 10 different shades of blue, but I guess it is supposed to be like that. He moves fairly nicely across the screen. Granted we don’t have a blazing 60 frames a second going through the system, but in Mega Man you don’t need 60 frames a second. Usually there isn’t constant action going on, so the game speed doesn’t have to be so fast. You can see some indication of where each pixel meets the other, but you will get used to the screen in only a matter of minutes. The screen surprisingly doesn’t have lines running into each other, or blotches all over the place. For what it was made for the graphics in Mega Man Legends are very nice.
Did you hear Mega Man scream!?
Well done or not, Capcom should be commended on the job they did with the voice acting. Although Mega Man’s voice can sometimes get annoying, at least he talks! I was very surprised that there was even voice acting at all in this game. Remember this was a very low budget game, and yet Capcom still added bonus features like voice acting. When you hear the name “Mega Man” you probably think of a big strong superhero, with a deep course voice. Mega Man has far from a deep course voice. He is portrayed as a kid, and since this is a kid’s game why not give Mega Man a child’s voice. When I first heard Mega Man’s voice I got annoyed that it was a child’s voice, but once again these are things that you just get used to throughout the course of the game.
Most of the other characters voices were surprisingly done very well. There is one in particular that I loved. In the beginning of the game when the engine in your ship is dying Mega Man’s grandpa yells out something. (I don’t recall exactly what he said, but I just remember laughing.)
The background music sounds very childish, but I guess it fits the game. You will be doing a lot of talking in Mega Man so that will cut out some of the background music. It really isn’t as bad as it may seem though, because once again it is another thing that you will get used to while playing Mega Man. The makers of Mega Man (Capcom) really did a good job in making a kid’s game. Previous games like Resident Evil were definitely not games for children, but it is nice to see a company with such a diverse way of making games.
Tell us about the Blaster Gun!
The gameplay in Mega Man at times may seem like a dumbed down version of Zelda. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because Zelda was an incredible game.
You are Mega Man. Your quest is to retrieve a mysterious, mammoth, power crystal before an evil group of pirates do. Sounds like a blast, bring it on! What chance do those pirates have against a little blue guy equipped with heavy armor and a blaster gun. Your basic attack is a flying projectile darting out of your blaster gun crashing into your enemy. You also have a physical attack, which is a powerful high kick that can destroy some enemies with one hit. Those pirates don’t stand a chance.
Some parts in the game can surprisingly get very complicated. Sometimes you have no idea where to go, you will just have to explore certain areas until you eventually make it to your mark. If you talk to certain townspeople they will sometimes give you a hint as to where you are supposed to go. Another interesting thing to do in Mega Man is the side quests. There aren’t very many of them, but if you talk to the right people they will ask favors, and give you items in return.
Mega Man can actually be quite entertaining if you stop thinking logically for a few minutes. The replay value is not that great in Mega Man. You will play through this very short game probably only one time and then throw it in a box. If you are looking for a few hours of entertainment from your favorite blue superhero then Mega Man Legends is the game for you.
How does Mega Man handle.
The controls in Mega Man are pretty easy to use. Mega Man moves fluently on the screen with each touch of a button. You will rarely experience a lag on the buttons. The only thing that I have a problem with in the controls section is that when you want to talk to someone you have to get right up to them to talk to them. You must be directly in front of the character you wish to speak to. It may not seem like a big deal, but it is frustrating moving this little blue guy to the perfect position!
You have a blaster gun attack, which is very easy to use; all that you have to do is press the square button. You can also “lock on” to an enemy by pressing the R2 button. I like the lock on feature because when you are in a room full of enemies you are going to want to dispose of them as quickly as possible. Using the lock on feature makes it a lot easier. Overall the controls are very easy to get used to, and you should have no problem with them.
An overall look at the little blue guy
Surprisingly Mega Man was a very entertaining game. It does not prove to be one of the best games in the world, but it is worth a few hours of entertainment. I would definitely recommend Mega Man Legends to any child. Mega Man was (obviously) a game mostly indented for children, and some of the themes in the game are very childish. To my surprise, Mega Man can actually be fun for any age. I was pleasantly surprised with what Mega Man had to offer. If you are a Mega Man fan, then I am sure you will have a great time with this game.
