Not really. I don't think The Pianist was one of the 10 best films of the year. Just that simple. Subjectively speaking, it's flawless.

As most (or some) of you know, this list was posted and then all hell broke loose with my computer. So I didn't get to respond to each loving comment as I would have liked to. Rest assure that all these nice comments are registered in my brain and at some point I'm gonna try to reply to all of them.Hopefully!

Best,

I'm intrigued by your words for Punchdrunk Love and now can't wait to see it! You know others from Nebraska, eh? :-)

Nice one! I really want to see The Hours but it isn't playing anywhere around here. Has everyone in Connecticut gone insane? Don't they know that The Hours is supposed to be really good? I finally saw Chicago yesterday and was very impressed.

I'm sorry to hear about your computer! That really sucks. :(

I was really hoping you weren't gonna put Punch-Drunk Love on this list, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. This is a strong strong list and it is interesting that your top 2 films are films that you acknowledge in your review as having huge problems. Gangs is wildly unfocused and Punch Drunk love (And I'll say this until I die) has absolutely no subtletly or substantial screenplay. That said, I like that you didn't get pretentious and truly picked films you enjoyed.

Minority Report, though? Come on, that movie was terrible.

aight I'm done..great work per usual.

...a justified knock on the U2 anthem that nearly obliterated my enjoyment of the ending of Gangs of New York. I couldn't believe Scorsese, usually so tuned in to his soundtracks, would permit this milquetoast palaver to crown his achievement.

A fine list, and I agree with you in many cases, but you made no mention (even in your parlour room of foreign worthies) one of my top five films of the year: Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away.

Still, a bang up job.

I would guess it is sheer exuberance at being able to post a list complete with links embedded in it.

Note that he did take it back later in that thread on the board...

Dan, I do believe you've been rumbled. I quote:

Watch out, though, I promised on the Movies Message Board that anybody who publishes a Best of 2002 before February will get a NH from me. I can't require that everybody *see* everything, but it has to at least be possible for everybody to have seen everything. So hold off on that one if you're preparing to publish...

I do believe it's still January, sir. Were you warning me off so that you could get your foot in the door :-)

Now, ordinarily I'd have hit that NH button just out of sheer petulance, but this is such a fine list I've got no option but grant it the VH it deserves. This time.

December showers bring January sours (Reply to this comment)

As late as mid-October, I hadn't seen more than two or three films that were list-worthy even in desperation. And then the end of the year came and suddenly there were dozens of very good films in the theatres.

I hear ya, bud. The final few months of 2002 found me, bumper-car style, bouncing from theatre to theatre, trying my darndest to see all the fine flicks bucking for Oscar buzz. Alas, those two months of nirvana only serve to heighten the letdown that January inevitably offers.

Great list, Dan. My top 10 shares 6 of the same movies as yours. But I, like Chad below, am holding off on publishing the list, due to its embarrassing incompleteness. I mean, for godsakes, I still haven't viewed Far From Heaven (he admits, and hangs his head in shame).

Kudos...

Of the entire year! A monumental achievement. I better get off my lazy butt and see some the year's best!

I think I liked your "extra" sections as well as the first part, maybe better! Jude

Nice review and good top 10 list.

yes! what a read! what a list! what a country! :)

i'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad you chose PDL as your top film. I haven't posted my list yet, due to not having seen all the films i feel i need to see in order to make a proper one, but i can already tell you PDL is sitting right at the very top of mine as well. A second recent viewing only confirmed that opinion tenfold. Glad to see you, arguably the finest film writer on the entire site, endorsing it as the outstanding film that it is.

interesting pick with CQ. I have seen it, though i can't say i liked it better than 'adaptation', i still thought it was quite interesting. And dear lord that girl in the film within a film. Where did she come from?! (Answer: probably heaven)

Truly, though, no selective reading on this piece, dan. i read it all and loved what i was reading. i'd most helpful this if i could, instead i'll just VH it and hope some one else realizes the greatness of this piece.

take care, have a good weekend,
chad.
