Your comment will send me to the library! I have heard both, but a long while back. Actually, Ma recorded these works (at least) three times, and I'm not certain which edition you have in mind. The most recent one, accompanying some videos, I have read is wonderful, but have not investigated yet.

Thanks for stopping by.

I enjoyed your description of the cello suites. Have you heard Yo Yo Ma's and Rostropovich's versions? I would love to hear what you think of them. As Rostropovich's recording is the first one I heard, I have found it difficult to be objective about Ma's interpretation. To my tainted ears, Rostropovich got it right and Ma, that young upstart, just flashes his way through. I have not heard the Casals or Stark recordings...off to the library!

Thanks for the lovely words, and story of youthful piano lessons. I can relate: I started piano when I was 3 (training throughout college), and have had plenty of finger-twisting, gutwrenching moments myself. I'm a composer now, so when I make a mistake on my own music in public, I can tell them I meant to do that!

Bach is at the top of my pantheon. He sits there, frowning amiably down on the rest of us (or, I should speak for myself, down on me...).

You write wonderful reviews! (Reply to this comment)

Bach has always been one of my favorites, even as a child. My mom turned me on to him via an album called Switched on Bach. I suppose she thought it would be a "cool" way for a kid to be exposed to classical music. I would have to agree.

Though, I do occasionally get flashbacks of piano lessons, J. S. Bach sheet music (with LOTS of black notes on the page), and tangled fingers.

=)

Keep up the terrific work!

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence; it means a lot to me. I am trying to find my voice as a critic (of books, films, and these days mainly music), and your words are very encouraging! I have a lot planned for future reviews in classical, so keep your eyes out for me-- I'm just getting started!

Whoooo!

I'm thrilled you like the Rosen/Art of Fugue recording (and this recent review...). I am indeed a Bachhante-- as I say, though without alcohol or running through the forests beating the earth with a thrysus...

Thanks always for your kind words,
John
