I am so impressed! Epinion allows a lot of freedom in deriving topics. I plan to look at some of your other favorite movie lists as well.

I saw "Tiger Bay" as a child and don't remember much about it. I saw the two Saura flamenco films as an adult and liked them both. You should post your own list!

I think "Rules of the Game" is overrated. "Seven Samurai" is a great film, but there are so many great Kurosawa films that I could have a top-ten list only of them.

Sorry to see Seven Samurai go. That's gotta be one.

Also, most people have Renoir's The Rules of the Game. I'm not sure that wouldn't be on mine.

An odd choice that WOULD be on mine is Jane Fonda in "The Morning After".

Most people would not think "Fun with Dick and Jane" is the kind of film to list as a "great", but I might anyway.

I say this because all of the notice taken in comments about "Green Tomatoes", lol.

But my all time favorite would still be (now available on DVD) John Mills and the pre-Disney Hayley Mills in TIGER BAY.

You deserve to view it, you'd done the research. So I'm recommending TIGER BAY to you.

ps -- let me hear how you like it :

pps -- the 2nd and 3rd place for my all time list would go to two Carlos Saura films (available on DVD from www.flamenco-world.com -- they DO play in my DVD player, though they are not listed as Region 1 DVD's and my player is an el cheapo model by CyberHome that I got for $29.99 at Best Buy)

The films are CARMEN (by Carlos Saura) and BLOOD WEDDING (Carlos Saura)

I hope you get to see these, too.

Like I said, this is a list of what I like. My list of best films is, I think, unassailable, and I knew that including "Fried Green Tomatoes" would raise some eyebrows. Probably "Lacombe Lucien" is a better film than "Murmur of the Heart," but the latter affected me more.

I both like and admire Ang Lee's films, even "Pushing Hands" and many of the performances in "Ride."

And "Made in the Shade II," but this list is not of that kind of movie!

Ford and Widmark (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, Stephen_Murray is an Advisor on Epinions in Movies
"The Quiet Man" is not my favorite Ford movie. Maybe "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," maybe "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

For the psychotic young Widmark, check him out pushing the old lady in a wheelchair down the stairs in "Kiss of Death." The maniacal laugh returns in the role of the racist stalking Sidney Poitier in the latter's first role in "No Way Out." He played tough cynics in "O. Henry's Full House", "Night and the City", and "Pickup on South Street," though he got to be the noble physician with Jack Palance playing the sinsister psychotic in Kazan's "Panic in the Street."

for calling attention to some deserving, but lesser-known auteurs here: Georges Franju (although you don't mention Eyes Without a Face or Judex); Jean-Pierre Melville's Le samourai; Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller (please note ampersand in title); Preston Sturges (of course); Jean Vigo (although I like If....); the Italians Visconti, Fellini, Antonioni, De Sica, and Rossellini; and others.

I also really liked Ang Lee's Ride With the Devil and don't know why it didn't garner a better critical reception.

Richard Widmark I remember from Don't Bother To Knock, but was he repellant? Notorious? I need to see that again. Surprised more John Ford movies not here like The Quiet Man.

I think "Raging Bull" is Scorcese's best film, but this is a list of my favorites, and I like "NY,NY" more. "Fried Green Tomatoes" would have no chance for consideration of my (soon forthcoming) best film list, but thinking of it makes me laugh (if you re-view it, I'll bet that forever after you'll remember Kathy Bates and the hand mirror as well as the parking spot).

Great, informative list with a couple of genuinely surprising mentions. For one, having "New York, New York" on the list - not to say it's bad, it surely isn't - as the only Scorsese film intrigues me...as does "Fried Green Tomatoes", though to be fair i've only seen it once and i was all of 12 or so at the time (though the only scene i really remember is the one you referenced with Bates and the parking spot). Maybe i'll give it another look.

* Buster Keaton's (1927) "College" was on my earlier list, though I think I now prefer "Our Hospitality" (1923)

I agree heartily with you here for sure. "Our Hospitality", while having the distinction of being the first Keaton film I had ever seen, also holds the distinction as being the finest, with "Sherlock, Jr." nipping at its heels.

And any list with one of the all time great comedies, The Lady Eve, is a good list in my mind.

well done, quite the enjoyable read.

take care,
chad.

the Oscar for Best Picture. Bob Fosse, Liza Minnelli, and Joel Grey, though, did get Oscars for their work (Grey bested Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, and James Caan in the Supporting Actor category). Of the films I've seen here, I have enjoyed most of them. This just means I have a lot of other great films to see. Thanks for sharing!
Sincerely, Pat

Very nice list. Most of these would have to go on my special list (some sort of 'best movies most people haven't heard of' list or such), but many of them would be on some list.

Agree about Moulin Rouge, and I think (been a while now) I mentioned something very similar in my review. I wanted not to like it, and the first 15 or 20 minutes were living up to my expectations, but then suddenly I got the hang of it, and by the end I thought it was very impressive.

Again, nice list.

Cheers!
