Packing Advice From A Traveler!Feb 02 '03 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Keep it simple! If most of you are like me, you really hate to pack. Fortunately, I taught our children how to pack, so I only had to check what they had done. My wonderful husband, has ALWAYS done his own things. So, I have had it easy in that respect. At this point, our travel is limited to the two of us. Not that we didn't have some great family vacations, but "just the two of us" is really nice.Unfortunately, packing, and what to take, it still the dilemma it always was, but I am getting better, and want to give you some tips that we use, that might make it easier for you. The worst packing job I did was a month trip around South America. It was hot when we started, cold in the middle, and hot when we ended. That was a challenge, and frankly, I did a terrible job at it. Not only did it take me ages to decide what I was taking, it took me weeks to unpack when I got home. The injuries from lugging around that heavy luggage probably exist to this day. So, we have gotten this down to a science, I think! See what you think. 1. Make sure you don't spent a fortune on luggage. It will be destroyed by the airlines, the cruise lines, or just get lost. I never spend very much on this, because if it is a mess, I have not invested much money. HOWEVER....make sure you get luggage with wheels on it. Make sure that everything has wheels on it! Even your carry-on. Nothing is worse at the end of a long flight than to carry your luggage that mile to customs. 2. Lay everything out someplace where you can decide what you are taking. Put the shoes, purse, jewelry, etc all out. Then, put about one half of it back in your closet. We went for a month to Australia and then on a cruise, and each had two carry-on wheeled bags. 3. Find things that mix and match. Stay with the basics. Also remember, that if you wear the same thing to dinner more than once, likely, no one will notice. If they do, so what. You will probably never see them again. The last cruise we were on was 17 nights, and one lady wore a different outfit every night. Now, that is a lot of luggage. 4. DO NOT use the hotel laundry. They charge about 4X that of a local laundry. When we were in Sydney, we found a Chinese operated one, next day service, and cheap! They did a great job, and the price was minimal. If you are on a cruise, use the ship's laundry or cleaners. The prices are reasonable, and it sure beats packing extra things. There is a little clothes line in the showers, so you can wash your "undies" and hang them up. Don't forget to take a couple of plastic folding hangers. They work wonders and take no space in your luggage. 5. ALWAYS take something to put all the c$#@ that you buy. You know those things that we really don't need, but somehow end up in our return baggage. A small bag that folds up works really well. Hopefully, this has given you some ideas that you might use. One that I almost forgot, ladies......take your own blow dryer. I have never found one that I like as well as the one at home. Or.....get a really short hair cut. Have a good trip, and a safe return. |
