I have a family plan with VoiceStream. My mom and I each have a phone and we get 1000 regular minutes, 1000 weekend and night minutes, and 1000 VoiceStream to VoiceStream minutes. I really like the plan flexibility and the fact that we were able to get a family plan in expensively. When we looked at other service providers, they wanted us to pay for the service and like $200 each for phones. With VoiceStream, there are a few phones with rebates and you can get most phones either for free or very inexpensively.
The service is good enough. The local coverage area for NY is from Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia up through Maine. The only time that I didn't have a signal was when I was in a remote area of Rhode Island. Getting messages can be a pain sometimes. I don't think they have enough connections to take care of the massive demand in NY sometimes; there are times of day when you can't get your messages.
The people who rant about not being able to make calls first have to realize that there are 8 million people in NYC and MANY have cell phones. No matter what service you get, towers will be busy. I have had very few dropped calls. And I've only had cell phone reception problems when under bridges, in elevators, or something like that. VoiceStream does just as well as any other service in NYC, and it's a fact that not every call will be perfect. If that's what you're looking for then you shouldn't be buying a cell phone.
Overall, I think VoiceStream provides service that sufficiently meets my needs and at a price that doesn't hurt my pocket too badly.
As a general note to buying cell phone service in NY, keep in mind that various NY taxes applied to cell phones are high; so when deciding on a plan, add another $15 or so to the price to estimate your monthly billing. This is not VoiceStream's fault; it's just a fact of living in NY.
