Hmmmmm. . . (Reply to this comment)

. . .I thought it was a given that Jodie Foster was a lesbian.
As for Tom Cruise, I just assumed he was a straight guy who simply was part of a marriage that didn't work and that he hadn't found anyone permanent yet.
Anyway, in my opinion, gay stars can play straight people just as well as straight stars can play gay people--possibly, better.
Look at Robert Reed who played Mike Brady. And Rock Hudson seemed about as straight as anyone--whatever straight is supposed to seem like.
When I watch a movie, I'm not thinking about whether or not the character is gay or straight but how well he/she plays the assigned role in order to make the movie realistic!
In short, your sexual orientation shouldn't be death to your getting straight parts, if you happen to be gay.
I think what I found to be the most surprising about your encounter with Tom Cruise is that he isn't six feet tall.
The reason for this is that everybody keeps going on about how 29th_Candidate and Tom Cruise look alike--so I was almost ready to read here that the former stood in for the latter as a body-double in this movie!
Guess that won't be happening, since Jim's considerably taller!
Speaking of which. . .the way I found you was that you've just been added to Jim's WOT, and I'm always curious about the people he adds!
Anyway, I'm glad to meet you! You seem interesting!
Cheers!

The Past Renewed. (Reply to this comment)

Fascinating stuff, Wayne. I tell you, Confessions of an Ambitious Standin could be a bestseller!
THE LAST SAMURAI sounds like an old Errol Flynn movie brought up to date, with a modern equalizing of the protagonists.
I would have thought that Cruise was shorter than 5'8" from seeing him beside (the admittedly tall) Nicole Kidman. No matter, many of the great Hollywood leading men have not been giants. Besides, camera angles, editing and key lights have a way of taking care of that.
Excellent.

Greetings, Ryan,
Ohh, another hiatus?? No wonder I haven't gotten any work in over 2 weeks!! Not that I'm complaining, mind you: I'm in a whirlwind of screenwriting passion and cranking out up to 10 pages a day! Now if only someone would pay me for this!
Yes, extra work can be quite a hoot. I saw Ahnold, too, up in the Bay Area when I lived there & worked on "Twins". What a trip, the guy has a head like a chiseled block! (That's a compliment, Arnie.) I'm still waiting for my topless strip-joint scene a la "Showgirls" - I'd be perfect as the Japanese businessman in the audience. "YEAH, BABY!!"
Are you a union or non-union blur? I joined up years ago when I lost my marbles and became an actor. Higher pay rate, but fewer gigs. Oh well, I'm here to sell scripts anyway, right? : )
See you on the set,
Wayne

Thanks, Becky,
I'm not sure you'd love the job so much at non-union pay rate; that works out to minimum wage! But you might have fun, I agree.
Ciao,
Waynio

From one blur to another (Reply to this comment)

At least they gave you the smoke pay! Most productions don't offer it if it's smoke via cigarette/cigar!
I too do background work in the "City of Angles" and I suspect you and I have probably passed each other at the craft service table more than once, assuming you've worked much the past year. (I've done background off and on since 2001, but consistently for the last 12 months.)
How's your hiatus treating you? :)
Like you, it usually takes a certain breed of actor to get my attention on set nowadays, but I do remember feeling a little bit star struck when I worked with Schwartzenegger on Collateral Damage! Helldorado was fun too, because it afforded the opportunity for me to see Christopher Walken work.
My favorite thing about doing background work is that every day is an adventure. I never know what I'll get to see, do and experience, and I love that variety. I've seen everything from stealth bombers buzzing over head while working on Bungalow Five, to hundred's of stampeding beach goers on the set of The Core, and just about everything in between. The sights and experiences definitely make for a fun work day!
Anyway, I've been reading your reviews and just wanted to chime in here. Take care and keep it up.
I'll see you on set one day! ~Ryan

Cruisin' with the stars (Reply to this comment)

Thanks so much for sharing your story! Very interesting, exciting, and hard work. I would love to be an extra if I lived in LA.
You're right: it's a shame that the tabloids are so obsessed with Tom's sexuality. Who cares?
Cheers,
Becky

Thanks, stockholder!
I wonder how I'm gonna top this one. Most of my gigs aren't that memorable, and the details are starting to get hazy. It's scary to think that as I get older, entire years will be just a blur! : )
I was also thinking of dispensing some free advice for wannabe actors who are contemplating a career in Hollywood (I was formerly an actor for several years). Is anyone here curious?
Ciao,
Waynio

I really like the way you describe the details without getting a big head or attempting to exaggerate what happened. I feel like I'm actually finding out what goes on behind the scenes.
Thanks
