I signed up with Greenfield Online since I've always liked filling out surveys and I like the idea that some of my ideas might actually make a difference. The idea of making a little extra cash on the side didn't hurt either. I've been doing Greenfield Online surveys since about October 1999 and have been getting paid since then.
Greenfield Online will send you an email telling you that there is a survey available for you online or you can access them through the member area of their website. When you go to the survey, you enter your email address and login. Survey questions are easy to enter, generally only needing a mouse click in a box, but some require a little more thought. They may range from what you drive, what you eat, what you buy, what kind of computer you use, your shaving cream, or even how often you use photo paper in your printer. I even got one asking what kind of beer I like. They are obviously tailored to you using the information entered at signup.
For each survey, you are entered into a drawing. It may be for anything from $5 to a certain product to a lot of money. Chances of winning obviously depend on how many people finish the survey. It's a great rush to get an email in your inbox telling you that you won money and knowing that it's not a scam. It is automatically added to an igain.com account you set up when you join Greenfield. From igain, you can request a check or have your money donated to the United Way, the American Red Cross, Greenpeace, or the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Alliance. Checks usually arrive in my mailbox much quicker than the time stated by the site.
Some surveys also see if you are qualified to join a focus group to help a company with a product or idea. If qualified, you will be invited to take part and have your ideas heard. You will also be paid for your time. I worked on the design of a new travel website and was promised $60 for the time. When all was said and done, I had a better understanding how consumer websites are made and found $70 in my igain account. That's ten bucks more than I was expecting. It does take a little bit of work, but it is fun and well worth it in my opinion.
The only problems I have with Greenfield Online are as follows:
Some questions get quite repetitive. Some times they will ask the same question in different ways to see how you will respond. Almost all surveys will ask your age and gender also even though this was entered in your membership information. You would figure they would have a way to simplify it a little.
Quite often the site stops working in the middle of a survey. This is a fact of the internet, but it is quite annoying when it happens after spending ten minutes clicking boxes and reading provided information. You also do not get entered for the drawing until you have completed the survey and submitted.
If you are a person who likes filling out surveys and hoping to have your voice heard, this site is for you. Please don't expect to get rich though. You may get some extra pocket cash, but it won't make you a millionaire.
