Dr. Dev's Definitive List of Dumas MoviesFeb 10 '03 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line I sense another of the Cardinal's evil plots in this here bottom line. Call the Musketeers! The Kingdom must be saved! Ahhh those swashbuckling studly men! Alexander Dumas originally wrote The Three Musketeer which tells the tale of the creme de la creme of the King's guard, the Musketeers. These are dashing swordsmen who, in most versions, have been disbanded by the dastardly Cardinal Richelieu, who has ulterior motives. While the title of most versions is THREE Musketeers.. you will find there are actually four key players: Athos, Prothos, Aramis, and D'Artagnon. Here then is the top ten list of my own Dumas favorites, most of which are Musketeers, but not all: 1) The Three Musketeers This is the 1993 Disney version with Charlie Sheen, Keifer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, Chris O'Donnel, Tim Curry, and Michael Wincott. One of the absolute best movies based on the novel by Dumas. Will keep you in stitches 2) Three Musketeers - Filmed in 1973, Three Musketeers: the Queen's Diamonds is still just as fresh and funny as it was back then. This version stars Michael York, Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, Charlton Heston, Frank Finlay, Faye Dunaway and Raquel Welch. Talk about an all-star cast! Was very hard to pick between this and the Disney version for the number one spot. 3) The Count of Monte Cristo - Marinermoose's review of the man falsely imprisoned who comes back to exact sweeeeet vengance later. Not the Musketeers, but a great story by Dumas. Now, there are many great reviews of this particular movie, so I'll list a few more here: ArtByJude, dragonfire88, Telynor. (and now you see why I didn't write one on this movie too..already enough good ones out there!) 4) The Count of Monte Cristo - patsyv did the only review so far of this 1975 made for TV version starring Richard Chamberlain. 5) The Count of Monte Cristo - fuche_bu's review of the 4-part TV mini-series starring Gerald Depardieu. Interestingly, Depardieu's son Guillaume played the role of young Dantes. 6) The Man in the Iron Mask - This is the 1998 version of the movie about a man who was imprisoned in the Bastille and forced to wear an iron mask. This actually centers around the Three Musketeers, now grown old, and their one last valiant deed. Stars Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich, Gerard Gepardieu, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jeremy Irons. Excellent cast, excellent acting. 7) The Man in the Iron Mask - Telynor's wonderful review of the 1976 made-for-TV version of the above story. This version stars Richard Chamberlain, Patrick McGoohan, Louis Jourdan, and Ian Holme. A must own for sure if you are into the Musketeers. 8) The Count of Monte Cristo - A review by George_Chabot of the wonderful 1934 movie, starring Robert Donat as Dantes. This would probably place much higher on my list if it were not all but ruined by colorization. grrrr argh! Why do they do that to prefectly good movies? 9) Three Musketeers - Naphtalia's review of the 1948 version of our comical heroes starring Gene Kelly, Van Heflin, Gig Young, and Robert Coote. The best part of this one is Vincent Price as the evil Cardinal Richelieu. 10)Four Musketeers - MrsNormanMaine's review of the follow-up to the 1973 version of the Three Musketeers. Cast is pretty much the same as the listed in the number 2 spot of this list. There are quite a few more Dumas flicks out there than there are King Arthur movies, so this was much harder to pare down to just 10. *pant* I'll get to writing my own full reviews on these soon. No really, I will. Seriously... |
