I haven't developed any of these symptoms as of yet, but then I've only been at the game for four months. I'll update the piece with the first sign of a polyp, buboe or chancre. So far, spotless as phosphenes.

I have to dispute... (Reply to this comment)

...your assertion that there is no risk of disease here. I am constantly tending to my open sores, oozing pustules, pus-y buboes, and fresh chancres. Sometimes I administer a local anesthetic and try to operate on my diseased inner organs. The feeling of accomplishment when you remove your own cancerous rectal polyps is incredible.

Hey there--
Yes, I'd thought of the slut angle, but forgot to slip it in (sts). You're quite right: the lack of double standard in usage at Eps is good.
That was most likely someone from my brother's and my uni club you saw at the rally (several members said they were going with their wheels); I couldn't make it on account of a dance performance (featuring my music) that I was attending (at Symphony Space).
Thanks for stopping by, B.

I thought you might appreciate this as a fellow Liberal Arts College person: I like the fact that, unlike in the real world, both men and women can be called sluts on Epinions. No double standards here!
Were you at the protest yesterday? I saw someone with a unicycle and thought of you, and I was going to say something, but I didn't know how to bring up the cult/video game/cyber sex.

I'm pretty sure you've hand modeled before.
My favorite line:
"shooting your prose in tiny, adolescent spurts"
Very nicely written, and a telling essay about our Epinions habits. I'm some kind of combination of the three. I do find, however, that I'll just write to write--not trying to win friends, trusters, or get off.

Ok, OK! Sorry, Don for the bitumen.
Can't a guy make a silly joke?
As Freud would say, no: according to him, all jokes carry a grain of truth (cf. Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious). But I say, sure...
If he thinks women have "penis envy" and all men have secretly wanted to sleep with their mother ... then he has another think coming. I mean... sleeping with my mother would be bad enough if I didn't know she really wanted to be a man.
Now THAT was funny! Seriously. An excellent rebuttal. I just worry about what Freud would say (considering it was told as a joke.)

This is an entirely unwholesome gathering. I like it.
Do you mean the video/sex/cult gathering, or the people who've left comments?? Either way, yes!
And, dammit, I can't get the taste of soy sauce out of my mouth!
Try a swig of vinegar.
Delighted you stopped by, dear Sue.

Re: Er...wot? (Reply to this comment)

Your comment reminds me of your piece on Mozart and Bach... er, exactly which works of Freud have you actually read? And how did they make you feel? I see. And tell me about how my asking you how they made you feel, feels? While it's "trendy" to "dump" on Freud these days, and while granted many of his theories are outmoded, he was and is a giant of a thinker with plenty valuable and relevant ideas to add on countless topics. Please don't make me write another list.
Not trendy, not dumping, thanks for stopping by and jumping,
John

Considering your response to Mike/mfunk75, I'd say the latter form of score? Hey! It's Valentine's Day... I'm up for anything, as long as no one gets hurt and there are no TV cameras or other men involved... Boring me-- such a goody two shoe.

Looks like you fall under the Epinions as Cult paradigm? Seriously, you've done your reading (not only my reviews but my profile MEMBER page! re: "reading sickness") and figured me out, unlocked the doors, thrown open the big curtain, and revealed... Al Gore??!! "My God!" you say, "... I thought you shaved that beard! And where's Tipper? I want to thank her for the gift basket."
See you at the end of our infinite regress!
and many thanks for the note--

I simply can't tell you which Epinions MEMBERS I think of as I write my reviews......
But I find each an onanistic orgasmic orgy of an experience. (And I keep running out of tissues, damn it!)
Very..nicely..done !!

Addicted and Antisocial Epinionator Responds (Reply to this comment)
by mfunk75
John,
Between your review and chaospump's Tao of Epinions (http://www.epinions.com/content_3113197700), I'm finally getting a handle on this place. Which probably means that an intervention from friends and family is needed, post-haste.
Great piece

with the video game analogy. In fact, I've been known in the past to compare Epinions to a big ol' game of the Sims. Think about it.

by mugwumpery
John. This is so funny and playful. Excellent work.
But now I'm going to take pleasure in your text. I wonder though to what extent this review and your body of reviews are endemic of a reading sickness. Literally a compulsion to read or consume works as well as make readings or interpretations of them. To take this one step further I also find it striking that others like myself bare witness to the scene of your reading and ourselves read you reading (through our comments). This is an infinite regress and a pleasurable one. Thank you. An outstanding performance.
