Dear mfunk75: I'm not sure I would put it on my list, but for anyone who wants to really understand Hollywood since World War II, THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE is required viewing. I liked to see it in the other company.
Excellent list.

I really would put Storytelling in my top ten list. I think it is very funny. It was the best laugh I had in a theater since Pulp Fiction. The writing is very well done. Check out Eberts' review. I agree with Ebert in that Solondz gets the effect he's after.

Would you really put Storytelling on your Top 10 list? I found it meandering and mostly pointless, although at the time I gave it a lot of leeway, being a big fan of Happiness.
Thanks for the read and the comment

I did see City Of God. It is a fantastic movie. I am putting that as my runner up. Adaptation,Bowling for Columbine, and The Kid Stays In The Picture are also in my top ten of 2002!! I was wondering when is The Kid Stays In The Picture coming out on DVD??? Catch Me If You Can,Chicago,Narc,Storytelling,Auto Focus,Late Marriage, and last but not least is Y Tu Mama Tambien. That rounds out my top ten of 2002. You should check out Catch Me If You Can and Chicago If you get the chance.

Being here in dumf*ck Denton, only About a Boy made it up to the theatres here.
You need to get out of there, pronto, my friend. I can't imagine living in a city where Bowling for Columbine can't have an extended visit. Or any of the other 8.

Guess I went too much for the commercialised stuff, though in my defence I think all but two of these films were released within the last month here in the UK. You can bet that had Punch-Drunk Love, City Of God and Adaptation been released in time, they'd have been on my list.
Great, great list.

Thanks for the kewl anecdote. I think I did read about that incident in the papers. You've got to give Moore credit. Even if you dislike his politics, at least he's up there trying to think things through.

It looks like Spirited Away will be released to DVD on April 15th. Hope you can hang on until then. It's certainly worth the wait.

Young John-
Maybe it's my having been steeped in Japanese culture for a while, but I found nothing confusing about the film-- I mean, no more confusing than Alice in Wonderland... It has its own mad logic, and is perhaps more graspable in that way by children than adults
Don't get me wrong: I loved the mad logic enough to put Spirited Away on the list (albeit just barely out of single-digits). But there were enough cultural allusions that flew over my head to keep it from being a masterpiece meant just for me.
Now Alice in Wonderland, I didn't get at all. ;)
Thanks, as always

Dandy.
Great and succint write up, senior. I was sad (well, sad is too strong a word-- how about devastated?) to see Spirited Away stuck in tenth place. It's my numero uno, followed by your handsomely placed Adaptation.
Maybe it's my having been steeped in Japanese culture for a while, but I found nothing confusing about the film-- I mean, no more confusing than Alice in Wonderland... It has its own mad logic, and is perhaps more graspable in that way by children than adults, just as children can "see" Totoros (giant forest spirits in Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro), whereas adults cannot.
A for the writing. Nice to revisit some of these movies you reviewed so well these past few months.

having seen all the extras on the Special Edition DVD of the first, before seeing The Two Towers was that I was aware of some of the tricks while watching this film.
Are you talking about the special effects tricks, or the narrative tricks? Either way, I'm not sure how this'd ruin The Two Towers.
Thanks for the read

And it's beginning to look more and more like I'll have to see Spirited Away - what with the universal acclaim and all.......
Spirited Away can be a confusing little beast. But you must see it, even if only for the sumptuousness of the artwork.

I have not (nor have they been shown here) had the priviledge of seeing your #1 film, Talk to Her, City of God, and The Kid Stays in the Picture.
Really? Not even Adaptation? The others I almost half expect, but Adaptation was just nominated for a boatload of Oscars. Tres weird.
Hope they come to you soon

El Stocko-
I did not see any of these movies. But I printed out your list and DO hope to see many of them.
None!?! Have you been so busy ripping on idiot son-in-laws and dominating Epinions-related pseudo-contests that you forgot the most important thing in life, i.e., TO SPEND AS MUCH TIME AT THE CINEMA AS POSSIBLE?
(sorry for shouting
I get excited when I get incredulous)
Anyway, hope you enjoy 'em. I know you will.

Lime-o,
(what are you some kind of film snob?!)
Of course! Have I made any claims to the contrary?
that final scene in moore's film dropped his film out of my top three, otherwise it would have been there. it was just so damn bad in its badness. baddity bad bad.
Yup. Much badness. Without the shameless manipulation, Bowling for Columbine might have been my top of the heap pick.
Thanks for the read, you filthy stripping slut

I loved Adaptation. I don't know if I would have put The Two Towers so low, but then I haven't seen as many films as you.
Of course, the problem with having seen all the extras on the Special Edition DVD of the first, before seeing The Two Towers was that I was aware of some of the tricks while watching this film.

interesting list you put together there mike. of course, mine will look much different - but that is largely owing to the fact that i haven't even seen five of the films you have on here (what are you some kind of film snob?!), and of those five, only 4 will probably show up on my list. but hey that's what this crap is all about, eh?
that final scene in moore's film dropped his film out of my top three, otherwise it would have been there. it was just so damn bad in its badness. baddity bad bad. and 'adaptation' seems further away from me the further i get from having seen it. maybe a re-viewing is in order.
