| clbrunson's Full Review: Asus AGP-7700 |
_I had just bought a new computer and ripped out its Nvida Vanta (16 meg) video card and replaced it with a Radeon Ve (32 meg DDR). I ran that card for some time so all comments will be in comparison to that card.
_First, I have read all the reviews on these cards and they are supposed to be competitive. I don’t see any comparison at all. My frame rate is far higher with the Geforce 2 GTS even though the GPU has fewer abilities then the Radeon’s does (the Radeon has bump-mapping and pixel shading support). Wouldn’t this give the Radeon an advantage in Mark2001? Nope. Not even close. My best score with the old card (overclocked) was 1890. My score with the GTS (also overclocked) is 3322! Want proof? Check out my screen shot here. http://www.geocities.com/clbrunson/misc/screenshot.jpg And I’m not even close to done with it yet. Nvida and Asus use standards when placing and securing the heatsinks and fans so larger and more efficient heatsinks and fans can be purchased and placed with just a snap! I plan to put that card through it’s paces and ultimately push it to it’s breaking point (that way I can justify getting the new Asus Geforce 3 deluxe to my girlfriend, haha). I will keep my Home Page updated for those of you that are interested in knowing the true limits of this card.
_OK, back to the subject. As far as speed, not to much can come close to the Geforce 2 GTS without spending a lot more money. However, it needs this speed to compete with the competition. Other video cards use “shortcuts” and smarter GPU’s to help speed up the video card, which the GTS just doesn’t have. They have solved these “problems” with the new Geforce 3 though (it combines a smarter GPU and better speed making it the most powerful video card on the planet!) .
_The Asus Geforce 2 GTS however, does not cater to the hardware freaks. It does not have a DVI output for digital flat panel monitors, or TV out, or multi-monitor support like the Radeon does. But… there are other versions of the GTS that have these features. You will just have to go with a different brand. Try the Hercules if you need any of these features but still want the performance of the Geforce 2 GTS.
_Bottom line: if you can’t afford a 64 meg card but still want superior performance, this is the perfect card for you!
