.
you'll be pleased to know (OK, you will care less!) the majority of central Iowa schools were open after 14 inches of snow recently. (I believe that was the same system that gave your area all that snow.)
I remember living in northern Virginia many years ago and the consternation that a half-inch of snow would cause...
Very..nicely..done !!
And I love that UK 'gritting' thing! Sounds much cooler than 'sanding'...

...for educating me on all this. I'm a California native and readily admit to being a Weather Wimp.
We had a fairly big rainstorm here last week. You probably would've been amused to see how utterly incapable we Californians are when it comes to driving in less-than-perfect conditions. If it weren't so sad to see all the spun-out cars, accidents and ambulances (not to mention the consequent traffic jams!), it'd be sitcom-worthy.
Lawn-Guylanders have waaaaaay more snow-savvy than I'll ever have!

As another native Buffalonian, you've got it exactly right. I remember when (after moving to SE Michigan) my kids got a snow day when we had a 6 inch deposit. I thought, "Snow day? For what?" Wimps!

Snow Handling in London (Reply to this comment)
by mattygroves
Weather Report - T minus 1 day - Arctic conditions are expected in SE England today, with up to 2 inches of snow in some areas, with dangerous drifts of up to seven inches. We recommend that if you don't have do drive, don't.
New Report - T day As the arctic front rolls down from the north, the M1 Motorway is shut due to icy conditions. Expect long delays folks! There are miles of tailbacks, so the gritting trucks can't get through.
New Report - T plus 1 day - Interview "I've been in my car now for 18 hours - and I'm only going 10 miles. The drifts almost cover half my tyres, and we're not going anywhere. Reporter Despite the fact that the snow was predicted, the gritting trucks have failed to get through. Local councils blame commuters leaving work early to avoid the snow, thus blocking any gritting work. We've had a real heavy storm folks!
URGGG! - This all happened a couple of weeks ago - the world shut down for two inches of snow. No-one shoveled - at all. There were no plows. There was NOTHING.
My mother, in Philly, took a tape measure to her drive - she had 29". All the roads were plowed - she was just awaiting her driveway contracted plow man to come and do her drive.
URG!
Cheers, Kate

Or you hear - possible one quarter of an inch of snow expected. Maybe. And turn off the alarm on your clock radio; pulling the covers back over your head.
I love the south.
