Re: Your missing some great places in Austin (Reply to this comment)

Not sure where the C-Store you mention might be (and I don't live in Austin any more).
I've been in Twin's 7th and Red River store a few times. You're right, a lousy beer selection. And although Antoinette may know what every bottle in the store tastes like, she and her staff have a nasty habit of forgetting what the prices are. I'm pretty sure I got overcharged every time I walked in the door.
For wines, there's a place out on Bee Caves next to the Belgian Restaurant - great selection, though rather pricey. And, believe it or not, the Eckards at Bee Caves and Walsh-Tarlton has (or at least had) a great wine selection. They inherited the liqour license and wine steward from a big discount drug store that closed a few years ago further west on Bee Caves.

Your missing some great places in Austin (Reply to this comment)

On the south side of town right off of I-35 (on the access road) is a small convenience store. Unimpressive until you walk inside... Holy Cow!
I don't remember how many they had, nor do I know how many they have now, but my roomate at the time relied heavily on them to find off the beaten path beers. (Avoid Schmaltz Alt)
Also, not impressive for beers but impressive for everything else is Twin Liqours downtown on 5th(?)and Red River. Antoinette is very knowledgeable on every bottle in the store.

They're in Plano, too; 500 block of Coit, I think. There's also a pretty good beer store at, I think, Preston and Plano or maybe a stop light or so north or south; Mr. somebody or other (hey, it's been 6 years).

Good stuff! (Reply to this comment)

mr. miselainis was amazed at the selection at Central Market (being a Canadian beer snob). It was so nice to get a CM near us on Greenville, then we up and moved out to the Godforsaken Dryville of Rowlett. We've taken to stocking up on our way home from work on weekends!
Thanks for the info- if we head out east again we'll know where to stop!

Thanks yourself, John. As one who frequently travels on business, I'm always happy to know the secret locations in new cities where one can get a brew other than typical supermarket stock.
Though I do have to admit that the Tyler, TX, section was more an attempt to get sympathy for local beer-lovers!

I'm impressed! Thanks for making readers (and drinkers!) aware of these locations! A well-written and interesting addition.
Cheers!

Travelers, indeed -- had I not already known of Spec's, Marks review would have definitely piqued my interest. Now, tell us all about Philly, eh?

nice review. this is invaluable info for those who live in or travel to these areas. btw, I am a bit tardy in my entry for this write-off, too. Guess, I need to get my act together as well.
