Nice review (Reply to this comment)
by lonelyladyk
I know all too well about toxemia. I suffered with toxemia through all 3 of my pregnancies. I had excellent doctors so fortunately with the exception of my son my other 2 children were born within 3 weeks of their due dates. But with all I had to have emergency c-sections. But in the end all turned out well. Great review.

I'm relieved it turned out so well. I wonder if it could've been prevented. I've read that omega 3 fatty acids will prevent preeclampsia and I wouldn't doubt it. Babies and moms need a lot and they're usually deficient.

My Mother had this with me and I was born 3 pounds, in an incubator for six weeks and both of us received last rites. A lot has changed in almost 43 years, good to know as well.
I do not recall if I was ever asked about this when I was pregnant though.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great comment! They say this only happens in 5% of all pregnancies, but since this has happened to me, everyone I talk to knows someone or is someone that this has happened to! Perhaps it is actually more common than we know? At any rate, so glad to hear your baby was born healthy!

informative. I hope that any woman who is pregnant or plans to become pregnant takes your advice. Most of us just assume certain things are just normal with pregnancy while indeed as your case they just may not be. I also had this in the final month of my first pregnancy, but lucky for me the baby was delivered shortly after the symptoms started to appear, my daughter was just under a month early. Thank you for sharing your important message.

Stevie!
I don't think many people had any idea. It happened so quickly, I didn't even have time to call my employers! They found it about it second hand! But anyway, after the fact there were plenty of well wishers, so we got better quickly.
Take care, Uncle Stevie! Suzanne :)

Tom,
Actually what I was referring to was the fact that it usually happens in first time pregnancies. He thought that perhaps this was my first child with Dustin. I'm sorry I didn't make that more clear, I'll go fix it now!
However, in my research, there is a genetic component, but I've only seen the links between mothers and sisters. That is to say, I would be more at risk if this had happened to my mother or my sister.
Have I thoroughly confused you now? Haha!
Thanks for the comment!

I am glad you and your baby are alright! I also developed Toxemia during my pregnancy. Not until the last month though. I didn't realize how serious it was until I did research afterwards. I didn't even realize I had it until I did research and asked my OB after I had Megan. Then she told me I did. Next time I'm going to find a more communicative doctor!
Great Review!

Hey Suzanne, so glad your outcome was OK for both of you. Great presentation of the subject in a powerful and compelling manner...
you said...
" However, mine happened with my second pregnancy, prompting my doctor to ask me when my husband was out of the room which baby Dustin was the father of! He seemed amazed that he was the father of both."
I have never heard of a 'genetic' component in the occurrence of this disease. Interesting. I will have to check this out...
Again, great essay...

Thanks for all of the comments, guys! Ann and Melissa say they've been through the same thing, and they say that only 5% of all pregnancies end up like this. I think the actual number must be much higher.
Anyway, Mary Ashley is our last baby. We'd made that decision before all of this happened. Toxemia did, however, strengthen my resolve to stop at 2!
Thanks for all of the great comments!

I went through this ... (Reply to this comment)

...very briefly, towards the end of my first pregnancy. We were blessed with a healthy baby girl, and at the time didn't fully realize how very sick I had been or how close we came to a very different outcome!
I am glad to know you and your daughter are well, and that she's home with you now! Sharing about your experience may help many others in the future.
All best,
Ann

I went through this, but I was past due when it happened to me. I had a c-section to get him out. I gained 20 lbs. in the last week of my pregnancy. Very scary stuff, in some ways I'm glad I didn't really know what was happening until it was over as I didn't have the time to be upset and terrified.
Thank you for sharing this - I'm so thankful that both you and your baby are doing just fine!

It is great you are both well. I had seen your mini-profile a while back and prayed for both of you. This was a great review being a man a really did not know much about Toxima I am glad you shared. I hope other men can take something from this so we can be compassionate towards our mates.
