| KBDUKE's Full Review: IO i-glasses X2 |
I just got my set of X2 IO Glasses last week because I have always wanted have more of a virtual experience when watching really cool movies. Reading alot about VR glasses piqued my interest in the late eighties and I got an opportunity to test drive the virtual reality systems that came out in San Francisco back in the nineties. I had often wondered when they would get around to doing something with this LCD display that I had on my head ten years ago but then it was being tossed around as a clever way to sell architecture and real estate. Back then entertainment and definitely gaming was just an after thought. Along comes the X2 IO glasses. Just when I had forgotten all about VR it resurfaces, in part with different packaging and a different focus. Its not complete immersion but it does come close.
The Good
The glasses' are different than previous attempts because it has a head rest that takes some of the weight off you face and places it on your head. Another innovation is the weight itself. At only eight ounces it is more of a pleasure to use. It no longer tires you out to wear it after only an hour or so. Why should you pay $800.00 for a headset? It does what it says. It creates a 7 foot screen only you can see and allows you watch movies etc. without cluttering up you living room with large screens and cabinets. The picture is sharp and clear, and the sound that comes out of the speakers is great, except it is only simulated surround stereo. It does what it advertises. Virtual Theater. You will feel like you are there. You can loose track of time and everything around you.
The Bad
The wires are inhibitive to movement. They can connect to any video jack you might have, Television, DVD, or VCR and it comes with the wires. The wires make it difficult to move or do much of anything other than watch the screen. They should really be wireless in order to make it a value at $800.00. The controls while easy to use are also easy to knock out of alignment. Without much tampering you can knock your settings out of alignment and then get ready for the mother of all headaches. If you are sitting or laying down then it really can provide a "VIRTUAL" movie experience. However, if you start moving around alot then it will knock the settings out of alignment. If you have trouble sitting still, then you should wait until it comes out in a wireless format. They really do need to tighten the controls so they do not slip out of adjustment so easily. If they made these two changes then I would give it a "you gotta have this, you need to get this rating." If you watch a movie with the glasses on, then I would recommend that you do not operate a motor vehicle for at least a half-hour after using the headset because you will feel a certain amount of vertigo. After using them for a few hours you really need some time to adjust back to reality. I have come out extremely disoriented. If you have children or need to be aware of your surroundings then, I would suggest not using the glasses until you can devote yourself fully to the experience. When you focus on the screens other things in your environment become opaque and you tend to lose track of the outside world.
The Ugly
I am relatively sure that someone should not use the glasses if they have epilepsy. The color variations and images flickering in the LCD screens could throw you into a seizure if you are prone to having them. I am not a doctor but I would suggest before investing your hard earned money into these Virtual Glasses you should check with a physician to make sure this will not effect you.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to "get into" their movies. The Matrix is a must see!
