| bleung27's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 4000 Series |
First off, one should choose to buy a Dell because they have great service and the laptops are customizable! Also, Dell provides notebooks with highest processor speeds before any of their competitors. For all the hardware you get, it's a really great deal. The customizability is extremely important, since it is hard to find laptops with 512MB RAM for a reasonable price.
What about the other Dell Inspirons? This is the only Inspiron that is reasonable to carry (8000 is just too big) and that has the cd-drive in the machine (2500 has external drives).
I've heard horror stories of how laptops never make it in the first fews months--that they always have to be shipped back and replaced because of some problems. However, I've had my Inspiron 4000 for about half a year now with no problems. The display is great, and it is a sufficiently powerful machine for development projects that I have.
The choices for factory installed OSes is somewhat limited--I could only choose Windows ME when I purchased my machine, which continually crashed. However, when I installed Windows 2000 Server, everything was as smooth as butter.
If you can afford it, get all the perks that go with a laptop--like a port replicator and a great speaker system. Port replicators are great since it can act like a desktop at home with mouse, keyboard, and monitor if you prefer, and you can unlock it and take it with you immediately.
The only cons are that it doesn't look as exciting as other laptops (like Vaios or Apples) and it isn't titanium, but for the money, you get a whole lot more hardware and performance out of a Dell. The Inspiron 4000 by itself only has one USB port--hard when I want to hook up a digital camera and an external cd-rw, but when I have it docked in my port replicator (has 2 USB ports), it's all good.
Those who are concerned with being fashionable... the 4000 will fit in Coach's adorable laptop sleeve, and I bought one from Eddie Bauer too--whereas the 8000 won't. The dimensions are just perfect!
All in all, if I can do development on this machine, then it's all I need--I love it! It might not be titanium but it still works after I dropped it a couple of times. I bought tons of peripherals though, and potential buyers should as well because it makes the computing experience so much better.
