by Freak369 | Feb 27 '03
If someone dies and they are on a diet – be sure the blame Ephedra and Ephedrine based products as quick as you can! [extreme sarcasm]

Mahuang is not dangerous if you know or not. Most people are media hugs and only believe what the news tell them. Diet pills that had mahuang in them also had a lot of aspirin and caffeine known as white willow bark and guiafenein. People would take diet pill with Mahuang and would fell like they took 50 cups of coffee because of the aspirin and caffeine in the diet pill not the Mahuang then people would work out or go out for a night out partying and get sick go to the ER the FDA and drug companies all ready had it pegged with spacial forms that only let the doctor state that Mahuang was the reason for the physical problem not caffeine, aspirin and alcohol. Why don’t we do a test and see with larg amounts of aspirin and caffeine take them for weeks on end and see how sick we are then try that with Mahuang, don’t ever do that you might die. I used to take just Mahuang and after the second day there are not side effect what so ever. For 2000 or more years the Chinese used it with no problem while the western medicine was still bleeding people for cold and flues people dying by the million at the old FDA’s hands. Old USA is a some what a dictator ship when it comes to medicine because it is all about money in who ever is in the office at the time hands, money in there hand given to them by the drug companies; they don’t pay for your drugs when you are sick but they love to keep you from helping your self if you can not afford it but the rich can, funny huh? Ha! Ha! Ha! The FDA got your poor butt. God can save you pray bow to God you don’t need drugs to make you better, ok I believe that one?. Mahuang is not a phen phen. Drug companies want mahuang so bad that they would kill all of us to get it if they could. Mahuang is a cure for so may thing you could not even imagine when put in the right combinations with other natural ingredients. I know personally of a few combinations that would rock the world but I will never tell anyone because of the media hugs brain washing. Word to the wise don’t follow what you hear because it is someone else idea not yours. There is always a rich man and that rich man makes his money by lying to the masses. We are known as animals to most of the rich and easy Pickens for them. So, Mahuang is not dangerous if you know or not

Supposedly the FDA wants to add a label to any product containing ephedra that says to the effect of "this product can be fatal" or something like that. I think that may be overkill, but then again that may be what is needed.

Don't they have those warnings on cigarettes? :] That doesn't seem to stop people from buying and smoking them.

I hear you with the Hydroxycut. There are some products that are just too strong for most people to use. Sadly, not everyone wants to invest the time it takes to lose weight. Like I said, you didn't gain the weight overnight so you can't expect to lose it overnight.

Thanks for the comment :]

Freak,

I wanted to make a couple points:

I think if more people learned to read the label on the bottle, followed the directions and consulted a physician – they might be alive today.
I'm not a doctor, either, but I would imagine that any physcian you talked with would advise against taking this supplement. It may have its medicinal benefits, it may not.

I’ve yet to see a bottle of any product containing ephedra or ephedrine [or any by product of the two] come without strict warnings about using it.

Overall, this is an excellent writing. I also dabbled with ephedra based products with scary results so this piece hit home for me. I, like most Americans looking for the quick weight-loss silver bullet, started taking Hydroxycut (which has the nasty combo of caffiene-aspirin-ephedra) and within two days I was getting the shakes, sweating with little or no physical activity and then my left arm started going numb. Needless to say I no longer use those products. Funny thing is, about six months later I met with a dietician, we formulated a plan for smaller portions and more exercise, and wouldn't ya know it, I lost weight. Now I just need to figure out how to survive the holidays without gaining it back!

Great writing, as usual!

Accountability is the key! And you are 100% correct - anything taken in excess will harm / kill you and that does include water.

You outweigh me by about 35 pounds! Hrrrmmm, too bad you're also at least eight inches taller than me. Crap, and the BMI calculator you supply is telling me I'm fat. Short and fat! Crap. Nice feel-good piece.

(Actually, quite enjoyed it. As pointed out, well-reasoned, vitriol-free rant.)

It seems to me that the bruhaha about these supplements comes down to people refusing to take responsibilty for their own actions (look at the obese guy trying to sue Mcdonalds et al) - anything, and I repeat anything when overused, can result in injury or death - including water (and it HAS happened.)

If people would take responsibilty, and stop looking for someone to blame...If I drink too much, fall over and crack my skull, should I sue or blame the drink manufacturers? No...that's MY fault.

Anyway, rant over. I guess you gathered that although I'm unfamiliar with the supplements about which you write (I'm a coach potato), I'm in full agreement with you!

Cheers,
Kate

As a toxicology technologist (for way too many years now!) I can say
that your information about the various forms of ephedra/ephedrine that
are/might be available seems very accurate.

A very clear, level-headed, non-rant explanation of the 'problem' and
your observations.

Very..nicely..done !!

I've never needed such products, but it was very interesting. I can't understand people who overdose. Hope you keep those pounds off!

Just like with any other drug, the label states clearly the SAFE, recommended amounts that should be taken. So if someone takes 10 Tylenol tabs and in return kills their liver, is it the drug company's fault? Of course not!! Same thing, in my opinion.
