TiVo SlowMo Repair

Feb 28 '03

The Bottom Line TiVo is addictive, but they make the repair withdrawals long and painful.

I have had TiVo service for my DirecTV for the past year and IT IS the greatest thing since sliced bread, at least when it comes to TV. The ability to watch a 60 minute program in 42 minutes, when you want to is a great convenience, and addictive. Unfortunately, the Hughes HDVR2 unit that I had stopped receiving a signal from the satellite dish after 11 months. After a $70 service call, the DirecTV tech determined that the fault was in the receiever, not the satellite feed, and that the unit would have to be returned to Hughes for repair.

After requesting a RMA number from Hughes, I sent the TiVo/DirecTV unit to their San Diego facility in late December. Two months later, they are still vague about when I might receive the repaired unit back. Over the course of numerous phone calls, the Hughes reps have revealed that all TiVo units, regardless of manufacturer, are sent to TiVo for repair. And communication between TiVo and Hughes is abysmal. A order status request from Hughes takes 72 hours to get a response from TiVo.

A recent phone call at the two month mark revealed that my unit number is in the low 400's - which means, according to the rep, "That at 200 per month (i.e. repaired units shipped), it will be another couple of months." 4 months, or more, to repair my TiVo unit. And I can't wait to get it back.
